New member with 1967 911S - Correct Talbot optional mirror?

    Hi everybody:

I am restoring a '67 911S that I bought a few months ago with the advise and help of a very good friend of mine. I became a member of the 911S registry and have been lurking around in the forum, but now that I am starting to restore my car, I am going to be needing lots of help. My car was widened and lots of parts changed, but the basics is still there, including the 911S shell, and 911S engine, both numbered very closely appart. I bought a 1965 912 as a parts car and have already been changing lots of parts, including several interior components, hood, front fenders and a few trim pieces and details. My bodyman will have to change rear fenders and a few other things.

    Now to my fist question:

Mirror: I understand a 1967 car uses the but could have a Talbot mirror as an option. I like the Talbot's looks, and I would like to know what to look for that would be the correct option for '67. I have seen some with a green button or medallion, while some others only have the name Talbot Berlin stamped in the chromed shell. I believe there were two sizes, and I have also seen ones more streamlined than others. What is the correct mirror I would need to look for?

    Thanks,
    Victor

    Talbot

Welcome Victor, this a great club and you will learn most of what you need to here. The Talbot you want will say Talbot W. Berlin stamped into the metal. I think the small (WRONG, should be the larger Sr.) [Jr.] 3.5" is used most, sometimes [usually?] fender mounted. Look here, the Samba sight , Pelican parts, and E-bay. I think I saw one for $50 today on Pelican under "lots of 356 ABC parts". What is your 67S chassis #, other details? Best regards, Rick

    Rick and Raj:

Thanks for your responses. So now I know I need to look for the Talbot mirror, in Junior size, with stamped emblem (and not green dot), and preferably with the W Berlin, and not Berlin only

    Carīs serial number is 306998

    Thanks again for the help,
    Victor

Am I understanding correctly that "W.Berlin" is an original mirror, and "Berlin" is a more modern, or reissue, mirror?

    Thanks - Brad

    Early Talbot sez W. Berlin

    Brad:

The W. Berlin version of the Talbot logo appears on the pair in the attached image. The boxes are dated '68 and I think the W. Berlin version is the early one.

    Victor:

Note that the correct optional mirror for the early Porsche 911, just as on the 356, is a Senior model not a Junior.

    Good luck with 306998 S!

Hmmm...seems I am still learning about these early Talbots.

I posted the "W" information on the linked thread but now have some questions:

    1. Raj - the mirror to body base is throwing me off in your pic. I "assume" this part is discarded when installing on the car but what about the seal? Do you get seals for the larger base and the smaller base?

    2. Senior vs Junior - I would think the 67 would get a junior size and the 68 a senior size, much like the durants of those years? Personally, I like the smaller 67 durant and ran that instead of the larger durant correct for my year.

I found my W BERLIN JUNIOR 3.5" on ebay several years back for around $77 by looking under Mercedes mirrors.

    Talbot 300, 301 and 302

There were three different models of the basic 300 Series Senior mirror: first, the standard 300 with U clamp attachment; second, the same basic mirror with the extended base for surface mount applications which was designated the 301; and finally there was the 302 with a special base that had a slot referred to as a prismatic groove cut down the center.

Here is how the Talbot + Co. information insert in the box shown in my post describes these three models (this particular insert is dated March 1968):

"No. 300 - with retaining plate (the u clamp)for body mounting in any place being accessible from underneath resp. from inside."
The 300 is illustrated in my post. This is the optional mirror from Porsche for 911/912 from '65 to '67. From Porsche it has a part nbr with a 644 prefix indicating it is a holdover from the 356 model.

"No. 301 - for body mounting from outside by means of 2 stainless screws." The 301 is illustrated in Raj's post, the one with the extended base, which if removed converts it to a standard 300. To answer Bob's question, it has the gaskets for mirror stand as well as the extended base included.

"No. 302 - has special base with prismatic groove on underside, for fitting sharp edged car bodies such as Ford 12/15/17/20M, Opel Rekord and Kadett, AUDI, British FORD and the like." The 302 is not illustrated here yet; I have one off my 65 Mustang - the separate bit referred to as the special base with a Prismatic Groove was mounted on top of the raised character line at the top of the Mustang door. Again, removing the special base converts it to a standard 300.

Interestingly, the mail address of Talbot + Co. is shown as:
    "1 West-Berlin 62, Eberstr. 80 (US Sector)"
This is from the days when Berlin was divided into US, British and Russian Sectors...the Cold War days of our youth (at least for the old guys on the Board).

All three models are shown in the two old editions of the Vilem B. Haan catalog I have.

    Talbot, Durant

    Bob T.,
the SMALL Durant (1965-67) is a 4" (100mm) and is the same size glass as the Talbot SENIOR - also 4".

The w.berlin junior 3.5" (90mm) looks much smaller in person.

    Mike,
Aardvark are the source for new mirrors, they also can help with parts to restore the old mirrors and are a source for the correct bases to change from the 300-301-302. Very knowledgeable and helpful.
