Thread: Very early 1968 911L colour code.

  1. #1

Very early 1968 911L colour code.

Please, can anybody tell me what color is 97-17420-l. This is the colour code as it appears in the driver's door tag of my 1968L Sporto, chassis number 11810155.
The car is in bad shape, repainted in red and in some hidden places I can see a kind of green.
I'll try to put a photo of that tag.
    Thank you.

    Jose Hinarejos.

Thanks for posting the paint badge. That confirms the code #. It does appear that the last character is an 'L'. This is expected since the 5 digit code is typical of Lesonal. However, your car is the only one I know of with that code. I would guess that the color would be in the yellow or off-white range. Greens are in the 62xxx range.
    16153 Champagne yellow
    17420 ?
    17616 ?
    17656 Lido Gold
    17657 Medium Ivory
I think the only way to find out would be to remove the paint badge and find the original color behind it. The Kardex at the factory might tell you the name of the color. Since the color code does not appear on the lists, I must assume it is a special order color.

    97=baked enamel

The 97 prefix indicates high temp baked enamel. This leads me to suspect that it may be a special order color selected from the 356 color charts. You may want to check the 356 codes for the name of the color.

Thank you for your help and your knowledge.
I'm far from my house now; next month I'll try to dismount that badge and send you a new picture.

Not the one you are looking for but some of the five digit codes are here. Lesonal is owned by Akzo Nobel, not sure about the Du Pont chart with the L-paint codes. EDIT, just notices that the L after the 5-digit code referes to Lucite as in Lucite codes.

NIce chart, but I don't think it is useful in this instance. The 5 digit codes we need to interpret are Lesonal codes. The Porsche codes shown here are those listed as Mfr. paint code under the paint chips.

I have contacted Lesonal / Akzo Nobel, and am trying to find someone there that can help clear up some of the mystery paint codes. I know of one used in 1972. Surely there must have been some sort of a list to choose from when the car was ordered. If not, then it was truly a custom color, and the number was assigned after the car was ordered. In such a case, the color is possibly unique.

If you go to Akzo Nobel's Lesonal site www.lesonal.com, you can access their color code info at http://www.qnetonline.nl/cgi-nt/qnet...asp?site=LESNA . However, 17420 didn't return any results for 1968. You may want to try earlier years if you suspect it's a 356 paint code.

Good luck; sorry I can't be of more help.

I tried that site before, but got absolutely nowhere; even with the codes that are commonly known. That is why I'm trying to get them to do some of the research for us. I doubt very much it is a 356 code. They 'never' used such codes in that era.

    Your responses are really helpful.
Here you have some more pictures, sorry for the bad quality. I'm planning to restore it next year. As you can see in the engine bay, the car was converted to manual but keeps the Sporto pressure reservoir.
Being a 1968 model, the interior looks original but the door pockets and other items look as 67 model. I suppose it's because is an early 68 model.
