    Outside / Inside temperature gauge

Does anyone know where these gauges were mounted in the dash of the early 911S cars ?

I think they replace the clock.

I have been looking at this question recently and have come up - so far - with two answers. One is that it was between the ignition and the headlight switch, and the other that it was the left-most dial on a five dial dash (on a 912 at least).

I have seen two versions - one VDO, which is calibrated in both deg. C and deg. F, and one from Mometer, which is deg. C only (I think).

If you're speaking of the outside only temp gauge, the only one's I've seen have been in SWB cars and are always mounted as the pic above suggests. I've never seen a VDO version, but would like to if anybody has a pic. The above one looks to be motometer and is in F degrees, as is mine.

    Wink temp. gauges SWB only?

My understanding is that these gauges were only available on SWB cars. The option must have been dropped by the factory after 1968.

911 outside temperature gauges were located as illustrated above in "green" until 1967 to match the other dials, and in white for 1968.

912 outside temp.gauges were provided by VDO, were slightly larger, and were fitted as an optional 4th or 5th gauge (only 3 dials were standard on the 912) and placed "in line" on the dashboard.

Here is an early (green) 912 VDO gauge.

Is this the correct gauge for MY66? The scale/ face plate looks odd to me. Any photo's/ scans from back in the days?

    Richard,
above pic is from my friend's Cyril MY66 car.
Its Motometer and is the same like 356's had - 60mm diameter.
He told me temp gauges with 80mm are for 912 only.
67S US/ROW had a slightly different rim around temp gauge and Motometer brand - same dimensions.
Other VDO/Motometer are available but initially have been for VW only.
I hope all infos are correct.

Wink white dial outside temperature gauge

Here is a white one (sorry for the poor photograph, I used a blackberry!). It was also made by motometer and is stamped on the back "68":

The problem must have been that the place was no longer available on the lower dash in post 69 cars. The main headlight switch was moved more to the left (to make room for the hazard/warning light switch), not leaving enough room for the gauge?

    I thought

This mounting interesting. It is the Hopkinson/astronaut '67S. Maybe a later addition with no cutting?

How about this picture from the Walt Cunningham car:

    Attachment 54820

It's a VDO, Celsius & Fahrenheit, it's on an original 67S and it's on the right!
