Geez, They're Even Great in the Winter!

I decided this year to use one of my Porsches as an everyday year around driver. So a couple of weeks ago I mounted Blizzak snow tires on my '79 SC Targa (the Red Cow). It can get pretty wintry here in Central Oregon - and it's really wintry at the moment. Continual snow, temperature right at freezing which creates that slippery slime on the roads, virtually no road maintenance.

I was a little worried about driving home from the office today. A friend of mine was going to come by for lunch in his Ridgeline and he canceled because it was so slippery. He got part way and decided to turn around when an Audi went by him backwards.

So I cleared off of the windshield and gave it a shot. I had no problems at all. On the way home I passed maybe 6 or 8 four wheel drives that had slid off the road (3 on one traffic circle alone). But the SC felt great. It's as good as my wife's ML500.

I'm aware that P-cars have been used for skiing and other winter driving - but I had no idea they were that good. What a bonus!

    Cheers,

This sounds like an Urban Legend. More than likely the car completely rusted in the time it took to make this commute

    John,

Rear wheel drive/rear engine makes a great combo for snow driving. When I was growing up in New England, you could always count on a fellow with a Volkswagen or Porsache to get you where you were going.

I'm in my ol 911RS replica [eEgads !! :-) ] chuckin' it sideways rallye style. Porsche 911s work great in the snow. This was back in 1988 and I drove it hard!

We don't "salt" the roads here in Oregon - The only danger is to your windshield and paint from the gravel they apply.

+1 on the Blizzaks - I have them on my wife's '07 T & C minivan, and it does better in the snow than my '99 F-150 4x4.

I guess I'm still stuck in the 80s... although my wife convinced me to shave the 'stache it was getting a little grey. Soooo, I formed the http://www.OldFartMotoringClub.com and now feel much better about it all.

MoF, I STILL own the same PRE skis and Marker MRRs, got 'em through the good old boys pro-form network, they're race flex specced. I get stares up and down the lift lines at Smugglers Notch, "like dude WHAT are you thinking..?". Even deeper stares when I sport my 1969 Jean Claude Killy Austrian built Head 810s that are from here to the sky ~ 210s. People think I'm nutso. I basically respond with, "we'll see who's at the bottom first..." It's tough to shake out of my system the top to bottom runs we used to do at Squaw Valley growing up, still in my blood I guess. Short skis suck, there I said it . I'd rather do turns on tarmac in my R53 Cooper S anyway.

Keep the OP thread on track [sorry...] Porsche 911s werk in the snow, just have the proper tires, you're good to go.

    Here you go.

I'm having *a lot* of fun driving this car in these snowy conditions in Bend. My house is one of four on a cul-de-sac and I go around the circle at the end like the hand of a clock goes around the clock - nose to the center and other end spinning around the outside (well, that might be a little exaggeration). What great practice! Like having my own skid pad. Wouldn't do it with my SWB, but the SC is perfect.

    Cheers,
