28.5 MPG with a 2.7 RS Spec MFI?

For those of you who read my post on my trip from Seattle to Sacramento down the coast, this will be old news....

When driving through the central valley of Calif earlier this month, Sacramento to Redding (no winds just a lovely 45 degrees) - at 80 MPH I calcualted 28.5 mpg when I filled in Redding. I can only imagine that if I was driving at 60 (yeah right) I would have had 30+ mpg.

With my tired 2.4 73 S motor, I was content to get 24.5 mpg at 75.

Never quite thought of a MFI motor as an economical freeway cruiser.

But then during spirited drives, reality returns with a paltry 10 mpg but twice as many smiles per mile too

    Pic from the trip.

    Thumbs up

WOW Rick... that is one finely turned RS....

Driving through a full tank at about the same speed as you:

The best I ever got with the 2.4S was just a little over 20.

With the 2.7/9.5 rebuild, just a little under 19....

On the track the old 2.4 - about 9.

    The 2.7 - about 7 ..........

On the several long constant throttle trips I did in my Carrera,I used to get around 23/24 mpg doing about 110/120 kph at 3300 rpm.
There seems to be a cruising 'sweet spot' in these motors from 3000 rpm to 3500 rpm in which good(for MFI motors) economy can be had.
    Just an observation....

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

    Sherwood,

You just made me eat my words... The speedo was calibrated for 60 series tires and is now running 55s. However.... the 2.4 S numbers were on 55s. If 60 = 100% then 55 = 83% 28.5 mpg then should be 23.65 mpg.

Chuck, thanks for providing some good benchmark numbers to help bring me to my senses.

Thanks for saving me from myself.

Now I will have to try and take satisfaction from fixing our carpet cleaning machine. Drat!

    Rick,
I had to say something, otherwise I'd be wondering where I missed the extra 9 mph I should be getting.

Even then, I'm still a mile or 2 away from your mileage figures - maybe heavy foot syndrome.
