    Number of '67 911's Produced?

I was browsing around the Red Book last night and saw some numbers for the umpteenth time that I have always interpreted one way - and saw that it was possible to interpret it another. Under the O Series Production Numbers it list:

    1967 911 Coupe - 3,421 (VINs 305101-308522)

The number makes sense if you subtract the VIN's.

But then, as we know, it states that 911S's had the same VIN range, but followed by the letter S. It gives a count of 911S Coupes produced as 1,823.

I have always thought (apparently wrongly) that there were 3,421 plain Janes and 1,823 S's made. But, if S's didn't share VIN's with Normals, then the total of the non-S's is actually 1,598. Is that right? Fewer Normals than S's?

    Cheers,
    JohnA

These are the results of a collaboration between myself and Jim Schrager. The actual "S" Kardex were counted by someone who shall go unnamed and actually has copies of ALL of them.

    1605 911 Normal Coupes
    1818 911S Coupes
    3423 subtotal coupes
    358 911 Normal Targas
    360 911S Targas
    718 subtotal Targas

    4141 Total 1967 Porsche 911s

Yes, normals are more rare than Ss! BTW, no numbers were duplicated. In other words there was not, say, 316819 AND 316819S, only in this case 316819 which is my car!

You need to check your math, it should read 483 S Targas, should it not

Thanks Allen - great info! Now if we could only figure out how many are left. Think of the attrition, what with rust, wrecks & racing (both real and rat). That's always been a topic of discussion in the 356 world. With the soaring values, we do have recent rescues, but I imagine less than half are left. Any ideas? Probably relatively rare.

Yes the departed Harry Pellow, "The Maestro" used to ponder the 356 question and even tried to get CA DMV tell him how many were in CA. All to no avail. Well, I'd guess too less than half, maybe well less than half. I have a photo data base that I have been building for that past couple years and I have about 150 1967s; this is a picture file by chassis number and I've made no attempt to log chassis numbers that I've not photos for and really have not been at it very long. Still, given how prone these cars are to rust and seeing some VERY rusty cars up for sale as values climbed, I'd think 50% way on the high side but I have no, even, quasi-scientific way of venturing a guess.
