Thanks for the new info guys. I'll update the first post tomorrow. Yes, that is the earliest Mg case in my database. That really narrows the gap down to about 60 build #'s.

Here is an interesting engine case for sale: 901/16 6197299
So why is it interesting? The factory literature says the last one built is 6197292
So it is very late, and if I can get the build # it should be interesting.

Is it me or are the first 5 numbers dark while the last two are shiny? Would it make sense that the factory might set aside some cases for stamping at a later date?

The case was painted red, and the lighting is poor although the use of a flash is evident. The original resolution was poor also, so I had to massage the image a lot to try and make it readable. I think Porsche record keeping was poor; I find evidence of that regularly.

    New info from George:
NO BUILD # obviously it was discontinued before the end of model year production!
4 digit case pairing number 0214, had only seen 3 digits before

    911R Numbers

Of the three R engines I have Numbers for, only one has an original case. 901/22 - 11089 - 5080012. The others had replacement race cases but Numbers were questionable. gordon

    Hi dave got your PM.

I'm guessing my 66S may be the oldest surviving in the world?

It was an August 5th build date 1966.

    Chassis 305360

    Engine 960073

    Transmission 103077

    Type 901/02

It will be up for sale in a few weeks time as it has just finished extensive restoration and thinks I have bottomless pockets! It was certainly worth doing for such a collectors piece but unfortunately circumstances and way too many cars/toys means she will have to move on

Hope this helps and great work on the database

Here is an old thread on the topic:

305133S still seems to be the earliest, and Max is still active on the forum.

See this post for some interesting info on the production dates for the 1967 models.

They started very early in 1966 building the 1967 models.
