    Gas tank goodness

Just installed my refurbed gas tank. I know I'm easily amused, but I really like it. This tank was in great shape, as is, so I didn't remove all of the factory coating, just at the seams and around the few scrapes etc. Those were ground down to bare metal and POR-15'd, then I re-coated the whole tank with Wurth Hi-build black, then Wurth Grey. The Grey was supposed to be the factory match, but it didn't match very well, in my opinion. Too much silver in it. I painted over with Hi-temp engine paint in Ford Grey. I'll go to purist hell, for sure, but I like the way it turned out. You decide.

Looks great Al! When I did mine, it turned out a little to light grey, I did not like that....

    John,
I thought that the Wurth SKS turned out too light, as well. It also looked to have a bit of silver in it. It didn't look like the factory color, to me, and it was also too close to the body color. This is a shade ot two darker.

    Ringmeister,
I've already had to touch up the scuffs that I introduced installing it. The 1st one is the hardest and then after a while I get used to it.

    regards,

Al, it was impossible to get the grey Wurth in Norway, I had to settle with the black SKS ;-( I acid washed it after using a heat gun to get off the original undercoating. Filled a couple of pin sized holes with JB weld. Then sandblasted it, then rince in a industrial cleaner. Then POR-15, acid primer, epoxy primer, Wurth, and then grey paint.... I think the painter also missed on the structure of the SKS, crap...

Next time, I will shoot it my selves.

    John,
That looks great. Nothing nicer than newly finished and/or plated parts. It is amazing the amount of various cleaners, solvents, paints, plating and coating that we end up using on these projects. My garage is turning into a hazmat zone.

Al, don't worry about the 'purist hell' the tank looks great, so what if it's off a shade or so. What I ended up doing was to slice off a section of the painted undercoat and having a paint supply store match that color.
