    Driver's Manual Wallet

I have three of the red plastic "wallets" that are used to hold the Driver's Manual and other documentation. I think they're all early ones, but they have differences. One is very dark maroon with a grey interior, another is dark maroon with an interior color I can't remember (I'm writing this in the office) and the other is a brighter maroon with a red interior. The first two are wrinkled and look older, the last one is perfect and looks pretty fresh. Can anyone enlighten me on which one might be proper for my '67 SWB?

Also, any tricks on getting the wrinkles out? I've thought about a heat gun but I don't want to make things worse. (My first rule in fussing with these car is: First, do no harm ).

    Cheers,

The 65/66 have a "wallet" with a tiny Porsche script, about the size of a dime.

Inside/outside color is the same, but the finish is different on the outside (outside is 'wrinkle finish'). I would describe the color as dark maroon.

FWIW I think the maroon/grey are for LWB cars. The logo is also larger than for a 65/66. Also do I not know whether 65/66 takes the same wallet as 67.

    Original Wallet for early 67S

    John:

    Maybe this will help.

I have what I think is the original wallet for an early 67S Coupe, 305637S.

It is dark maroon, both outside and inside.

The outside has a slight grain and is matte.

The inside finish is both smoother and shinier than the outside.

The Porsche badge on the lower right front of the wallet cover is just a hair taller then a nickel.

Its contents, which may assist in properly dating the wallet, include the following:

    911S DRIVER'S MANUAL which has printed on the fly page: "w 312 e Edtion V / 66"

PORSCHE 911 Service Book No. 23320 which shows part nbr. "W 3921 1.66 Edition ll.65 Printed in Germany". The book contains an inked stamped entry from the dealer (WESTER MOTORS, INC. 1187 Del Monte Avenue, Monterey, California) with a hand written vehicle delivery date of November 5, 1966.

becker autoradio clear red tinted plastic wallet

Mexico TR OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS (this model radio was factory installed option 9345 in 1966)

WARRANTY TICKET B 012876 Mexico with Porsche factory ink stamp Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche KG. Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen indicating the Mexico radio was installed at the factory (as opposed to dealer installed)

Mexico Gerat Nr.: B 012876 (small white ticket) no date

Schaltplan "MEXICO TR" (wiring diagram) no date

becker SERVICE Adressen Liste No 26

BECKER RADIOWERKE GmBh insert "Achtung!...Gute Fahrt! insert, no date

BOSCH-AUTOANTENNEN INSTRUCTIONS FOR MOUNTING & NOTES ON USAGE (Bosch antenna instructions for mounting and operation) no date

Given the consistency of the dated material in the wallet and the fact that the Mexico TR model radio was a factory option in 66 (but not 67), I would venture that the wallets in use in late 1966 were dark maroon inside and outside. This seems to be in agreement with Richard's findings.

As to thoughts on getting the wrinkles out:

    1. cut corrugated card board in the relevant sizes to act as inserts for both the internal pockets of the wallet. This is just to provide two flat inserts, no stuffing desired here

    2. apply heat from a hair dryer (no heat guns here please) from 18 inches until somewhat pliable and then smooth by hand (keep the dryer 18 inches away to avoid distorting the plastic)

    3. once smoothed, leave it between two big, heavy coffee table books overnight

If this does not work perfectly, it should at least provide some improvement. And, most importantly, you did not destroy the wallets. These are just my thoughts. Accordingly, I would try this on the worst example first...

    Flunders description meets mine observations.
