After watching the video, I think Porsche has created an atmosphere that seems too sterile...all white background almost, with no posters or pictures of historic events that would lend a sense of how things were when the car was built. The way the cars are displayed seems to not invite close inspection because the cars are on platforms that won't allow it. That is a shame because looking at these historic cars should be all about close inspection to see the evolution of Porsche design. I think the building is an interesting architectural design, but it doesn't lend itself well as a car museum...too cold looking.

Thanks for posting the video. The museum might seem a little sterile on screen, but walking through it would probably feel a little awesome. Anyway it's the workshop I really want to visit

    Gib,

I agree with most of what you say but add a crowd of people and I bet the atmosphere will change for the better. I'm a little disappointed with the amount of cars on display. It seems to me they could have fit a few more in all that open space.

I always felt the old museum had a way of illuminating the difference between the museum visiting tourist (Is this all!?) and the Porsche fan (I can't believe how many great cars they crammed in here!)

Interesting. I had the opportunity to visit the old museum about 10 years ago. Only about 20 cars on display then. Now they display about 80. Still, with a collection of 350 you would need to be a very special visitor to get to see the workshop and the hidden part of the collection. I can only wish.

I was at the factory in 2004 for the last time w/ the 356 club and then we were shown Werks I and Werks II.

Very cool! I'm going to be there on business in a couple of weeks, and look forward to seeing the new museum. It will be interesting to see how it compares to Mercedes' museum, which is a remarkable experience.

My initial impression agrees with the above criticisms; too sterile and unimaginative (especially when compared to the Mercedes museum).

Initial impressions aside, the old Porsche museum was very disappointing, IMHO, and I look forward to seeing what they've done.

For those who have never been on the factory tour, I strongly recommend it; even if your heart lies with the early iron, it's an amazing experience.
