Thread: 356 Convertible D

There are no inconveniences with a speedster. By now everyone should know what they are about. The speedster is a pur sang sports car. Take it or leave it. The D not so much. I'm on my eighth speedster since '64 and have never considered a D, roadster or cab. I've driven all of them and they are all nice rides but they are not like speedsters. What Raj said. Like here T,E or S. If given a choice I think we know what the answer would be. I think a really nice D should be 150USD or so. The one your friend has sounds about right at 110/120 if in good shape. Beater speedies are more than this and always will be.

I've driven numerous examples of both Speedsters and Convertible Ds, but I find I like the D because it's more civilized with the bigger glass, better seats, and roll up windows. It still has the beautiful A body and Speedy dash that I love, though.

I'm actually glad they're not worth as much as Speedsters because that makes them somewhat attainable for a Ham & Egger like me.

Marco, that looks like a fiberglass replica. I would take a real D over that. Heh heh.

I just grabbed the first google photo I saw.

And I would agree with you wholeheartedly.

I have owned and raced about 25 Conv Ds... For many years in the late 1970s-1980s I owned 85502 the protype Conv D supposedly called a "Speedster D". This car never had holes for the D emblem. The car was originally white and had a twin grille deck lid with Rudge Knock-Off Wheels... Everyone knows that it is an absolute fact that 35As only had a single grille deck lid! But check the back page of many 1959 Chirstophorus Mags and you will see an Advertisement for Drauz with a white Conv D that has a twin grille deck lid...

Then if you check the Conv D registry you will find that 85502 has a special history of famous and important owners (not me) but some guy named Ferry Porsche (who ever that guy is) was the original owner...

Photo of 85502 in 1978 of me at Laguna Seca... I also raced at Riverside and Willow Springs and up on Mulholland.

Like a moron I sold the car in the 1990s because I had a Carrera Speedster and this 1962 Twin Grille Roadster..
