    Four-Cam 911R's

So whatever happened to the Type 916 four-cam engines that Porsche experimented with in the late 60's.? Vic Elford talks about driving one in the Tour de Corse in 68. It was used in the Targa in 69 and Larousse used it in some rallyes in 69 according to "Excellence was Expected".

Excellence was Expected also claims that the remaining motors were 'sold to Mueller-Perschl, the builder of the KMW sports-raing cars' in 1972.

Curt posted a photo in the Rallye thread of Elford at Corsica and I assume that this was the '68 edition that held the type 916 since it is using Fuchs.

So, where are they now? Does anyone have a photograph of one of these engines. I wouldnt mind having one for my car!

Could this be the Holy Grail of the 911 world?

    Dave,

the only readily available image of a 4-cam 911 engine that I know of is the photo in Bruce Anderson's "911 Performance Handbook".

I'd post it but I'm noty sure how Bruce would feel about seeing his published work on the internet and I can't find my copy of the book.

My memory is fuzzy on this one, but I think I saw a cutaway of one of these engines at the Donningtom museum in England in '93 when I went to the one-time-only European F-1 Grand Prix there.

the second picture that I have posted was caught at the starting in 1969 Tour de Corse. I don't know at this moment the name of its pilot.

There is a very good description of the 916 engine in Ludvigsen, pages 459 - 461in early book and 395 - 397 in the 3-vol book. Remaining six engines were sold to Hans Müller-Perschl . It's not clear how many 911R's had that engine.
