    Corrections to serial numbers

Noted below are a series of corrections to the charts published in "Buying, Driving and Enjoying the Porsche 911 1965-1973."

These additions and corrections were made possible by continued research led by Allen Henderson. In the next edition of the book, we will correct all these errors. And any others we can find! Regards, Jim Schrager

    --------------------
    1. 1966 911 Coupes:
    Chassis numbers: 303 391 - 302 949; 1559 cars

    Engine numbers: 903 551 - 903 910; 360 type 901/01
    Engine numbers: 907 001 - 908 185; 1185 type 901/05

Reason for error: long standing errors in earlier charts

    --------------------------------
    2. 1967 911 production numbers:
    1967 911 Coupes: 1605
    1967 911 Targas: 358

    1967 911S Coupes: 1818
    1967 911S Targas: 360

Reason for error: long standing error in chart and confirmation that chassis numbers were not repeated for 911 and 911S chassis; this required a "hand count"of the Kardexes to verify

    ----------------------------
    3. 1968 911 Chassis numbers

    1968 911L Coupe: 11810 001 - 11810 720

    1968 911T Coupe: 11820 001 - 11820 928

    Reason for error: typo

    ---------------------------
    4. 1971 911T Coupe numbers

    1971 911T Coupe: 911 1110 0001 - 911 1110 2583

Reason for error: long standing error in chart, typo.

Please send any comments or corrections to Allen (drrsr@aol.com) or me (jimschrager@gmail.com). Thanks.

Those 1966 chassis numbers just don't seem right

Wow, last was 908185, I just calculated that out yesterday. Where did this info come from?

    Corrected numbers

    Jim,
this is a good thing. For many years the 1967 911/911S serial number totals were just screwy. Thanks for the hand count..this is Real Good stuff.

Maybe the other authors will use your corrected info when they reprint - lets hope.

Have you been following the third engine numbers that Dave Pateman is just now publishing here and on Pelican. It looks like the factory never 'splaned to us' what that little telltale really was. It is a fun activity to be forty years out and we still get worked up on a few numbers/history.

    Dave,

The numbers came from "our source near the Alps" who actually has the Kardexes and some production record access as well. The Kardexes were looked at for the 66 year models and the last ones confirmed, ditto engine numbers. As posted previously, for 1967 models the S Kardexes were counted.

Typo in chassis numbers for 1966 Coupes

Please note the 1966 Coupe chassis numbers should be: 303 391 - 304 949. Sorry about that, so many typos, so little time. Regards, Jim Schrager

Do you happen to know the vin number and production date of the last 67S-i guess production date is going to matter more-specifically the last 67S produced.

    Raj,

I do know about the first two coupes:
    305101S May 24 1966
    305102S May 12 1966

Yep, 102S was finished before "the first," 101S!

May production dates for the first of the 67s does explain a few things. At this time they were still producing 1966 models, and had no idea how many would yet be produced, so that is why they started at 305101; I'd guess that 1966 production was near 304500 at the time. Then when 304863 was produced on June 7, the 67 models were already well in production. Hardly any wonder then that it was called a 67 model on the Kardex.

In reality then, the 67 MY production began before 66 MY production ended. Also, what we thought of 66 MY production being up to 305100 is not correct. There are no VIN's between 304950 and 305100.
