Thread: Racing 'grenade' oil filter

    Racing 'grenade' oil filter

One or two, including David at Tre Motorsport are looking into the re-manufacturing of the magnesium 'grenade' oil filter housing, thought I would post a few detail pictures of one of the problem area's, the actual oil filter.

The original here is of the separate disc type, any idea's from filter manufacturers or anybody as to a replacement, or can anybody identify who made the original perhaps.

Also pictured are plastic versions of the disc's, again NLA, I wonder where they came from?

We're talking with System 1 (filter mfg) to make a pleated stainless mess insert for us , instead of the leaf or disc styles. The pleated unit will not "leak" between each level. As this will be a reusable unit you can wash clean, we intend on including two with each "grenade" purchase.
This should make for a superior sealing filter with good surface area. Since buyers of this item would be presumed to take impeccable care of their engines, we are not worried that these repros would have slightly less surface area compared to the oe discs. You'll be changing your oil far more often than they may have back in the day
I'll post pics of the repro castings next to a real unit tomorrow

Dave, do you think your filter unit would be available separately for an original housing? Looking forward to your pictures.

Mike - in your search for the original manufacturer for the filter discs, I have a suggestion (assuming nobody recognises the manufacturers logo on the left hand side of your 4th photo above...)

Most manufacturers marks are trademarked (registered)

Most trade mark databases are searchable using "text" or "figurative elements" (Vienna Classification) (specific geometric keyword descriptors).....anybody know a patent attorney that could provide some guidance ??

A long shot but might be worth pursuing...

    Funda Filter

This looks like a miniture version of a Funda Filter used in the pharmaceutical industry. Solids stay on the "leaves" and fluid passes through. Micron size mesh made of stainless steel. The big difference is the Funda filters the good stuff, and this filter takes out the bad stuff. Way off topic, but thought it had some similarities.

The plastic ones look like the manufacturer could be K&N.
I have sent an email with the photo to their tech address.

Do I recall there is a Porsche (964?) piece that replaces the engine cooler and uses a spin-on commercial filter?

I like my old 906 filters for historic reasons.

Yes, a current version could be better.

I think it best to use current spin-on filters given the low cost and easy ability to cut apart the filters with a ‘can-opener’. My ‘can-opener’ came from Summit Racing for some bargain price. Something Pelican Parts needs to sell.

I still want someone to manufacture a replacement oil tank similar to the GT3 version that mounts on the engine. I have previously posted on Pelican about this. There are some serious advantages. It can include an integral spin-on filter.

    Best,
    Grady
