    Plating Questions 1968

I’ve got all my parts ready for the platers everything is cleaned and almost sorted. I will be getting the parts done in Cad type I and II and Black Zinc (case through bolts). Thanks to this board and Pelican I almost done sorting but a few parts I am unsure about.

    This is for 1968 911L.

    1. The carb cross bar is silver but what about the supports that bolt to the manifold and the hardware? I have one clean and one gold cad.

    2. What color should the fan strap be on a 68? Paint, Cad, Other...

    3. What parts exactly are pot metal and should not be dipped?

    Thanks

    Bret,

    What age is your ’68?
    Early, alu case?
If so, I suspect the silver cross shaft was as ’67. I suspect a silver cross shaft had silver brackets.

My January production mag case ’68 has cad with chromate conversion on the carb cross shaft as well as the two support brackets, pivot balls and associated hardware.

The fan strap is black paint. Finish is the same as the engine tin, not gloss. Plating under the paint might be useful and hidden but not original.

If you suspect something is not steel, try a magnet. You are correct to not get pot metal or aluminum near the plaiting process. Ask Pelican milt about his ‘70S aluminum throttle body rods.

    Best,
    Grady

Yes, Parkerized. You heard that from me.

Only the later straps are painted-- the problem with the straps is that they are right under the hole in the engine lid, so water gets in and rusts the strap.

Here is a "tell" for date that maybe even Dr. Ing. Grady Clay hasn't heard of! There is a DATE STAMP on your fan strap, down near the end. In the form of X XX-- mine says 2 66 on it. You can also see who made the strap by looking on the captive nuts-- NORMA as in NORMA-SCHELLEN, maker of fine hose clamps in a Porsche near you.

To Parkerize, first bead blast the living behaysoos out of the strap, then use a parkerizing kit like the ones the gun refinishers use- you are looking for a dull gray phosphorous finish. That's for concours. For the street, I am going to use Eastwood gray rust inhibitor, which is hard as hell and will keep the rust at bay. Of course you need a second strap . . .

Thanks John! My strap has the same date 2-66 of course Norma made the strap it's really just a giant clamp. I am leaning towards using black zinc vs. paint on the strap. Too many projects to add Parkerizing to the list...

    Hi Bret,

I would double check that your cad plater is going to bake all of your parts within 4 hours of the plating. The baking it designed to remove hydrogen caused by the plating process. If the parts are not baked there is the possibility of hydrogen embitterment which can weaken the metal.
