Anybody know what plate serial numbers correspond to the year? I know for 68 they can start with a v,w,x,y or z.

I got the info on my black plates from one of the license plate collecting groups on line. The guys are very helpful, total experts and kind of, um, obsessed.

(Not that there are any obsessed collecting types on this board... )

Even if you don't want to be a fraud, these people can tell you what number letter sequence is valid for each year: http://www.licenseplates.tv/cat/california_147.html

Wow. Fraud city. How do they get away with printing up fake plates to anyone who has $80?! Amazing.

interesting how that site says they won't ship a CA plate to a CA address.
but they don't have that restriction on the other states.

    no love for CA.

I emailed this company and received a reply that they have no guidance on the issue of number sequencing for CA plates from 1963-1969. I have a set of black plates from 1967 numbered "UZE 299" that I would like to use on my 1968 911 that has blue plates on it now. If a 1968 model could have been sold in late 1967, wouldn't this number be allowed? I see Bret saying they must start with V or later in the alphabet for a '68 model. Does this mean my UZE series number would not be allowed? I have checked with DMV and verified that the number is not in use currently. I called the Special Processing division in Sacramento, and they could not give me any definitive answer, and said the operational date for VC Sec 5004.1 is not until July 1, 2009. Has anyone tried to do this yet?

    Thx,
    TT

UZE for 1968 sounds like a fairly good match. My Dad's 1969 911E had black plates that I will never forget...ZIT.
