Thread: Caliper Bolt/Washer Question

    Caliper Bolt/Washer Question

I have noticed on all of the un-restored steel calipers I have dismantled there are never spring washer used on the four through bolts. Checking other threads posted here from professional caliper rebuilders their pictures' show they do not use spring washers either. So it looks like ATE and the professionals do not use spring washers. Looking through the factory manual and parts diagram Porsche lists spring washers and recommend replacing them when you split the calipers. Should I add spring washers to my calipers or is there a reason for not using them?

    Thanks,

    Brad

Never have seen a spring washer on a through bolt. Ever. Are you sure you're not mistaking the ones on the mounting bolts for the through body fasteners? The caliper mounting bolts are the only spring washer's I know of and I've taken apart thousands of calipers.

Got to agree with Eric on this; I've never seen washers of any sort on a caliper bolt.

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I agree, all of the calipers I have ever seen also have no spring washers on the through bolts. I was confused when I researched the manual and the parts diagram. Both show spring washers.

Here is what I found in the manuals...

Attention fellow caliper geeks (that's you Pateman)

I ran into my first set of washers this week on a set of front calipers off a 65C.!

    Pics to follow.

Why does this manual say to install the dust covers dry, removing any grease from piston, and my re-build kit says to lube the underside with brake grease? Just curious, don't mean to hijack.

Jon... are you talking about your S-Calipers? Those pretty red ones!

If so, you could try to install them dry; let me know how that goes!

Seriously, either lightly paint the top and outer edge of the dust cover mounting ridge on the caliper with "brake assembly lube" (not standard petroleum grease) or add a light layer to the underside of the seal itself. The clean sealing area of the caliper, the rubber on the seal and the metal retainer inside will make it all but impossible to install dry.
