What axles do I have on my '68 911?

They are the type that have rubber boots over them. I thought '68 had the older style (by the looks of PET)? If the car did have the older style, what axles would it have been updated with. Thanks. Sorry if it's a dumb question. You can tell me so, if it makes you feel better.

(I am going to drop the engine/trans to replace the throw out bearing. Ultimately, was wondering what gaskets, if any, are going to be needed).

Bill, you have the Lobro axle, the Nadella is the "open type" you're thinking of. I'm reasonably sure the change over occurred with the 67 models.

Thanks, Ed, you are right--I have the "closed" type with the boot not the Nadellas. Maybe you could help sort out whether I need these gaskets?

Are Nadellas no longer available? Reason I am getting confused is PP shows

    Bill,

I believe that 911's never had Nadella rear axles. Early 912's were fitted with Nadellas.

The Lobros for a 65-68 are not interchangeable with the 69-75 Lobros so you need to be careful when you order parts. I'm sorry I don't have part# information. If you call Will Pringle at CSP (626-445-0108) he can set you straight. I guess that's why I don't bother with making space for part #'s in what's left of my grey matter.

    cheers!

Bill, I don't have my parts books here at home, but the foggy memory says that the early Lobros (yours) may not have even used gaskets. Seems to me that the C/V seated into a recess in the stub axle and didn't need the gasket. I'll check tomorrow for you. And sorry there John T, but yes, the early 911's also used Nadellas, in fact we're doing a resto on a 66 911 as we speak, and it has the Nadellas, plus I remember that "back in the day" we had found a machinist who could do a rebuild on them using the Datsun 510 U-joint. In fact early on Porsche said you could only use the ZF LSD with a Nadella. Bill, you definitely do not want anything from 69 up, as that was when Porsche increased the C/V diameter (so they would be strong enough to be run at an angle when the wheel base increased)

To add to what Ed said the early lobro 66-68 had six bolts that held the axle to the flange the later CV joint had four bolts and two roll pins.

A local fellow here has a 1965 911 which had the Nadella shafts until he changed them recently.

Hope this helps...the parts book says the Nadella shaft was applicable to "911, 911S, 911TU, 911L NADELLA". The LOBRO shaft is listed as applicable for "911, 911S, 911TU, 911(USA), 911L(USA) and also says "Not for limited slip differential". There is no reference to a cutoff/changeover date/VIN. etc. Go figure. And, they are 'gasketless'...but be sure and inspect/replace the boots as needed. Good luck, Brian

The '64 and '65 911s had Nadella and maybe '66. My '65 911 still has them.
