Thumbs up The Hall of Fame - All Stars

I came across a corroded screw the other day. So I got out my trusty spray can of Kroil and in a few minutes I was able to unscrew it easily. I can't remember how many times Kroil has taken care of this problem for me.

It got me thinking about products that are outstanding - that do a great job simply doing their job simply. It would be really interesting to hear favorites of those on this list. Over time we can build a kind of hall of fame of the real all stars.

So, my first nominee is... Kroil!

It works better than anything else I have ever used to free up rusted and corroded fasteners. It's saved me unknown hours and aggravation. And it even smells great.

    Cheers,

    Here's another one...

    Ratchet thumb drives.

Super convenient ratchet when you are dealing in tight spaces and don't need a lot of torque.

    John,

    Splendid Idea !!

I have three candidates to submit for admittance to the Carguy All-Star Product Hall of Fame.

I think there should be certain characteristics these products posses to qualify for inclusion on this august list:

Must do exactly what the maker advertises

If it does more than one thing, so much the better

It must have been around for long enough to have become an established brand

Has to be generally available. It's OK if it requires a reasonable effort to secure some of this stuff.....(mail order only, etc.)

You must have personally used it and have experience with it

Ultimately, if you recommend it and a friend takes your word for it and spends his money to buy it and use it, ....will you still be friends afterwards.

    My first candidate:

    GIBBS Super Lubricant
This is an especially useful product for folks with Porsches because it works so well on so many different metals and alloys, and does so many things.

    My second favorite Garage Product:

    ROLL-OFF Cleaner

A truly wondrous cleaner for interiors, (carpeting, black and white houndstooth cloth) engines and transmissions, to clean oil leaks, remove greasy, grimy gopher-guts ( quoting Bill Murray) , dirt underneath in general, garagefloors, and a million other things. Genuinely effective stuff !!

Made in Florida, available mail order only so far as I know but well worth it.......I buy it by the gallon, then fill handy-sized spray-bottles with it. The best part, totally odorless.

Rejex. This stuff is the greatest nothing sticks to your car when its coated with Rejex, especially dirt. I've used many cleaning , waxing, and polishing products over the years but this stuff beats them all, and its easy to use. Two coats lasts a year.

My third & final candidate (for now)

    303 Protectant

I think the people who make Armor-All should go to prison, and the people who use it deserve everything that happens to their cars when they do. The so-called "premium car-care" products manufacturers who peddle their vinyl care snake-oil at dowright criminal prices (one grinning huckster with a 1/2 hour TV show comes to mind) should stick to making a better wax and paint-care products. Leave the vinyl / plastic care to the pros. 303 was developed for the aircraft industry for Lexan canopies ( as in the F-16 fighter ) to prevent UV damage and replenish the volatile elements in vinyl and plastic parts which break down as a result of UV and eventually discolor and become brittle. This stuff will not turn vinyl into patent-leather with it's cheap, phony shine, as so many other similar products will. I use it on my tires, interior vinyl, as well as rubber such as the windshield & rear window retainer channels, door gaskets, for a lasting deep black and UV protection. I learned about it from my favorite fly-fishing shop where they sell it for the care of fly-lines which need to float, last a long time and need to have a minimum of friction.

The final step in your detailing routine.

I have got to go with.........

3/4 inch masking tape. From taping off areas for painting to picking off fuzz at concours events. As simple as it may be, this stuff is a must have around the garage.

Do I really need to post a picture of a roll of masking tape? Come on guys! Use your imagination!

And the best quick detail type product is Zymol Field Glaze. Pricey but ummmm just smell that carnuba. Spray on cool panels, let it sit for 10 - 15 seconds, lightly wipe in straight lines in the direction of the wind coming over your car to spread out evenly with a barely damp microfiber towel, neatly folded, then lightly buff dry with another clean, dry microfiber towel.

If you are going to use it, do it right! Great stuff.
