    Porsche 911 Travelling Kits

My 911 came to me with a travelling kit bag masquerading as a tool kit bag. I've since straightened out the tool kit and restocked the travelling kit.

At this year's So Cal All-Porsche Swap & Car Display I loaned my travelling kit bag to Autos International .

So, if you want a travelling kit bag for your early 911, you should soon be able to get a decent reproduction. Autos Interntaional currently sells reproduction 356 tool kit bags (which are very similar to the travelling kit bag) for $ 75.

    Thumbs up

Very cool. Thanks for doing this. Auto's International has done a lot of work for me, and it is always top quality. What goes in a travelling kit? Don't think I have ever seen one. What years were they available?

Do a search, there's a small amount of information and a few pics here on the board.

The parts book stopped giving info about the plug types after 1969 (from my memory), so you'll have to go elsewhere for that information.

Bag colors changed as well, most (all?) that I have seen from 69 onward have been light grey, but the texture varies. The earlier ones that I have seen have been a dark blue, Jim's looks to be dark gray??? Some that I have seen have a Porsche scripted cardboard box for the gaskets, later ones don't.

Also the bag design hasn't changed from the 356 days, and there's a provision for a spare bulb box, but I've yet to see an original 911 travel kit with the bulb box, but that doesn't mean that it didn't exist.

I've been accumulating these kits for a few years, but I haven't done a complete dissection of them "yet". I've got 3 or 4 NOS ones, and 3 or 4 incomplete ones. All are grey, I haven't bought a very early one yet. But I may have a couple of pics I can post that haven't been seen, I'll try to find some.

Coincidentally, I was drooling over a travel kit just yesterday in a 1965 "barn find" (not mine, unfortunately!) - early 901 car with all records since new, bill of sale, tools and travel kit in perfect unused condition. The kit in this car is blue with a light grey interior...the clutch cable has its own matching sleeve. No bulb box, though, I don't think....

Here is a photo of a travel kit I sold a while ago. It came in my wife's Speedster but I was told that it was a mixture of 356 items. It gives you an idea of what it looked like.

The provision for a bulb box in the grey 911 traveling kits is too small for the grey light bulb box that is appropriate for these years. The 911 travel kit will also not close properly with the bulb box in place (nor will it fit in the original factory plastic outer bag for these kits with a bulb box in place). The earlier and smaller 356 bulb kit may fit in the provided flap properly, but is not correct for these later 911s. Perhaps this is the reason none of the grey 911 travel kits originally came with a 911 bulb box.

Can you please get some pics to post? I'll post mine when I get to their location, and have the time to do this...(too darn much business travel!).

My travelling kit is a green-gray color. I took a quick picture under questionable light to remind myself where things went.
