I remember that day as if it were yesterday. I was at that race and watched him go out of sight for the last time. We kept looking for him to re-enter the infield portion of the course. Most of us thought it was mechanical failure. It was truly shocking news when the announcement was made. A very sad day in motor racing.

David, that's amazing. I can't imagine what that must have been like.

More from the vault of Charles Cooper

With great pleasure, I revive this thread!

    1. One of my personal favorites: The Swiss entered Corvette which later crashed at same corner leads a group, including some awesome Porsches
    at Le Mans 1968

    2. More from Le Mans 1968

3 I think this is the winning GT40 from Le Mans 1968

    4. This IS the winning GT40. Dig the shot of Pedro!

    5. Pretty sure this is Spa, early 1970s. Siffert and a friend.

    Thumbs up

    GREAT pics Mark !!!!!!!!!!

    - The guy next to Rodriguez is co-driver Lucien Bianchi... and the guy drinking the Champagne is the great team owner John Wyer.

    - The last pic with the lovely lady is Siffert....

BTW - About 7 months earlier Registry member Davey Jordan was racing the L-88 Corvette for actor James Garner's racing team at Daytona......

    ...... and so it goes

    Cheers

    Thanks guys

Being the kind of car guys that we are, it is pretty much impossible not to LOVE these shots and the era they come from. Thanks for the correction Chuck and Curt, Coop has some really priceless stories and memories I'm sure. Imagine being a 20 year old kid in Europe with the access he had at those venues. I'm VERY grateful to Coop for allowing me to post these shots that were just sitting in boxes for many years. More to come for sure.

Maybe Coop would like to sell some prints ?

How about talking him into letting The S Reg Bulletin print some ? Maybe doing a feature on him - you're volunteered to write it

    - Now that they are out of the box and all....
