    Certificate of Authenticity surprises

When I purchased my 1970 S in the early 80's it had been greatly modified by the previous owner to look like a '73 Carrera RS. Over the years I have worked to keep it on the road and gradually make it more original. What I didn't know was how far I still had to go! One of the mysteries of the car was the different switches on the dash that seemed to have no function.

What I learned from the CoA is that the car came with above the bumper driving lights, below the bumper fog lights, and a rear window wiper. The car had none of this when I got it. I have installed above bumper grill mounted driving lights, and hooked them into the fog light switch, but wonder if this is correct. Anybody have both sets of lights, and know the proper wiring/switch layout?

How about the rear window wiper, anyone know where/how this is switched? The attached picture shows my dash with the extra knob just to the left of the climate control system. Perhaps it is for the wiper or driving lights? (and yes I am going to replace the hideous radio with a correct one I recently sourced).

Also of note on the CoA is that the car came with PORSCHE lettering on the doors, and had a rear valence. I am very excited about the lettering as I like the look, and now have an excuse to do it. Any ideas on sourcing the stencil for this?

So, right or wrong, the CoA was very interesting, and is sure going to cost me a lot of money.

The small knob to the left of the climate contols are for the driving lights, on/off with the high beams(through a realy), not the fogs. The fogs is the middle of the three knobs/switches in the middle of the dash. Wires for these go to the fuse box and from there to the lights. There is electrical diagrams posted in this forum. Rear wiper switch is a small knob/switch to the left of the steering wheel. You can also search for a picture of the rear wiper knob/switch in this forum.

See Bob Tilton's thread in the For Sale section of the site. He has just what you need for the PORSCHE side decals.

I kinda want to buy a set for the garage.

    ....the climate control system....

    Chuck,
For those of us in warmer climates(Cal) this is a rather optimistic description...
    Welcome to the slippery slope.
To return your '70 S to its original appearance will take some perseverance and no little $$$.The reward will be most satisfying.
Knowledge of how to do this can be found on this board.
    Ask away !!

    Cheers,
    Dennis.

Despite being a member of the early S registery for quite a few years, I never got much out of it until I discovered this forum. I continue to be amazed how much information is on this board. The advice from Zithlord to go search on the knobs and switches was a no-brainer but it never occured to me that there would be long threads discussing these. I have had this car for over 20 years and never knew what those switches were for. I just assumed they were some add on by the previous owner and worried about more basic things like stopping rust and keeping it running.

I am not trying to shill for Certificates of Authenticity, but I have learned more about the car in the last week than I have in the last 10 years.

I wonder who else has been surprised as they learn more about the history of their now quite old cars.

I did talk to Bob Tilton and ordered a set of the decals. I agree that they would look great in the garage also!

Chuck; I have also seen cars with the above the bumper grill driving lights with no switch. I think this set up was on cars without foglights under the bumper, but I am not sure. These came on with the high beams, with no option to turn on/off with high beams on. I have also seen factory cars with the Cibie Pallas rally/racing) hood lights with the switch to the left of the "climate" controls, working in the same way as described in my previous post, on/off with the high beams. A female friend of mine has a 70E with factory Cibies Pallas hood lights mounted on the hood with the same switch as you have for your 118 driving lights.
