You can clearly see where the matting has been trimmed/cut to shape and fit everwhere. On the passenger firewall its also a piece of black bitumen but for some unknown reason its gone a funny blotchy colour.
You have about a 3 hr window for more pics before I put it all back together again
Firewall is black all the way to where it intersects the floor and a little beyond into the floor area

Hello Frank:
First, I assume that you are restoring an RS sport or a car to specs as per RS sport.
Here is my opinion:
RSR was converted from RS sport. RS sport had no sound deadener on the floor.
The RS sport had "gummimaten" (rubber mats) on top of the painted floor. The black paint was to keep the color from showing between the edge of the gummimaten and the needle point felt carpeting.
Maybe the color on the floors did not have as high a gloss because they used less paint on the interior then we like to see nowadays.
The RS touring did have sound deadener applied to the floor as well as velour carpets. I suspect all this was applied on top of the color and satin.
Local shop here does black satin on the floor when restoring an RS sport in the same manner as the RSR photo Raj posted. Dash top all black. Footwell all black most of the way down to the floor just like in the image Raj posted.
Newton's RS sport Manhattan winner of many moons ago had the floors done like the RSR in Raj's post.

Yes the visible red paint in the cabin is very washed out nothing like the paint on the exterior more like the back of the front trunk area where it looks like they barely covered the steel with paint
Black is very matt and whoever did the doors must have had a steady hand if its hand done as the lines on the RS are fabulous around the corners of the doors
