Thread: Gas Tank Vent tubing

    Gas Tank Vent tubing

I need to replace the aging and leaking clear tubing the previous owner used throughout the gas tank venting system in my '72

Does anyone have a recomendation for the type, size and most importantly a source for this tubing.

I played around with the clear tubing you can buy at the hardware store and it appears the ID is a little small.

I thought maybe if I heated the hardware store tubing with a heat gun it would become plyable enough to work.

I figured before I went that route I would check with the experts

Thanks in advance for your help

Do not use tubing from the hardware store. It "sweats".

    type and size

I'm looking for vent tubing too (for my '69 912 Targa). It was mentioned to use the PVC type. Is that what's in the picture? And what size.

BTW, is that the standard way the tubing is routed in the 911s? I'm dealing with a gas tank to black vent box to venting system that goes to...I don't know where. The tubes are ends are just hanging out in the trunk.

    Thanks.

I got mine from a local hydraulic hose shop. I believe they said it was polyeurethane tubing. They told me it was rated for fuel. He also said that the additives in fuel are what cause the yellowing of the lines over time. Price was VERY cheap. I think I got 10' of each size and it was all less than $20.

    Gas Tank Vent tubing

The tubing is listed in their catalog as PVC clear yellow and is rated as safe for fuel usage. You will need to slightly heat the ends to swell them enough to slip on the tubing ends, but that is how the originals were also installed.

Adam S, you're 69 912 is different, all the early cars (up to 67) were routed as shown in my picture of a 66. !968 was similar but had an additional tube for the master cylinder reservoir vent, because that was the first year the reservoir was moved up to the inner fender from its previous location in the smugglers box. !969 had the vapor collector up under the dash, but not the charcoal cannister, or the vapor collector behind the left headlight, that started in 1970. Your 69 would have the vent line from the tank go to the collector under the dash, then forward to a 3-way that picked up the M/CyL vent, then forward to exit in the front bulkhead to the outside. This is all shown in the 69 parts book. I will try to scan and post that for you next week if I can figure out how to do all that. Ask my friends, I can lock up a computer in 30 seconds or less!!!

The McMaster-Carr website, listed above is pretty good. You can list the materials, according to their properties. They list only two materials that are compatible with gasoline. PVC and Tygon/PVC. They both are yellow, as pictured above in Ed's pic. Inexpensive. You can buy it in 10,25, 100 etc. lengths.

    Regards,

    Al

PS: Chris...you might want to verify if your tubing is polyurethane and double check on the compatibility with gas.

to soften the tubing I put it in VERY hot water right before installing, If longer you can just dip the tip in for a few minutes.

    thanks

thanks all. I have the '69 911/912 PET with pictures and parts numbers. I was wondering if anyone knows the specific sized tubing from before and after the black box under the drivers side dash.

    Appreciate the help,
    Adam
