    One Lap Of America

So one of our own (Caproader to you folks here and Pops to me) and his friend of 30 years are going to be participating in one lap of america this year. Basically you drive to tracks all across the eastern US in 7 days racing at different event at each one. Points are tabulated and a winner is determined based on class. It starts at South Bend on day one at the tirerack headquarters and then goes to Autobahn country club that same day in Joliet, Illinois. Drive that night to Cincy to race at Turfway Horse Track doing an autocross and then drive to Tennessee for a quarter mile ovel. Drive that night to Talladega for Day 3. Day 4 is Sebring and then Gainseville. Day 5 is Daytona and somewhere in South Carolina. You get the idea.

More info on all of the places here at www.onelapofamerica.com

Newho, it seems my dads friend will be blogging during the thing which you can read here.

Motortrend is going to be following them throughout and will be reporting the thing online here.

Of course everyone submitted a short bio so here would be the one for Team OMARC. (Old Man's Automobile Racing Club)

Their steed of choice is going to be a 73 911 2.4T coupe. Well that's how it started at least. It is now a 2.7 engine built to RS Specs. 3000 miles in 7 days for two people in a 35 year old car with no AC should be quite the adventure. Toss in some racing and sounds like a hoot. There is also another team using a 1970 911 I believe. If you happen to be near one of the tracks and want to cheer them on, I am sure they would love to see you.

Also I should mention a bit of thanks to our friends at Porsche of the Village for their sponsorship

Finished second in Vintage Foreign behind a 88 Mazda with a 350 Chevrolet V-8. Sometimes there's no substitute for hp's. Wore my early 911 S Registry T shirt for the picture with Brock Yates at the awards presentation.

Also had a chance to meet fellow member of the registry, Damon Josz (First in American Vintage). Damon, thanks for all the great conversation.

Still unpacking the car and winding down after 4000 miles in a 36 year old car. It certainly was interesting to see 6400 rpm in 5th gear on the Daytona Speedway banking, heading for the bus stop. As I was driving on the banking, I kept looking down at the yellow line thinking "There has to be an apex down there somewhere". But the track just kept curving ahead.

From previous post: Top two pictures taken at Gainesville, Florida drag strip. Bottom picture in rain from Talladega Grand Prix track on a very, very wet day.

All three pictures from Motor Trend magazine web site. More pictures on their website. They are scheduling a 10 page article of One Lap in the August edition.

More amateur pictures to follow as they come in from friends.

    Joel,

Thanks for your kind thoughts. As I mentioned under your original post, it was all great fun for a couple 62 year old guys who take their inspiration from the Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman movie. The car ran great and we rtan into a number of old friends along the route. My advice is to take a whack at it yourself.
