It's time to spiff up the under hood area on my SWB. This may have been discussed here before, but what black paint gives the most correct finish?
And should the fuel tank be black or gray? Thanks for the input!
Cheers,
JohnA

John,
Gray tanks were 64-65 only.
The finish can be duplicated using a Wurth SKS schutz gun, which has controls for pressure spray pattern volume etc. Some testing is required to duplicate the factory pebble finish, however.

Sorry to hijack John, but by that, do you mean ALL other cars had what color on the gas tank? I've heard racing cars were all black in that area, but I'd like to know about the "regular" cars, including LWB – 1970 and 71 in my case.
Thanks,
Vasco Ricardo

The fuel tanks of Ol' Blue ('67 912), Ol' Beige ('67 912) and Ol' Ivory ('67 911S) are all the same grey color as yours John. SKS sells the grey "Stoneguard" that I'm using for my fuel tanks. In the past I have used 3-M Body Schutz.

Does some one have period pictures to verify what is correct?
Does some one know whether the grey turns black over time since a lot of SWB cars I have seen look black.
Richard
The tank on my '70 was almost black on the exterior, but scratch the surface, and the same color grey as SKS was to be found. The black appeared to be discolored undercoating, and not a layer of paint. I stripped my tank to bare metal and applied SKS. I got what I think are very good results.
As for the paint, I used a locally made semi-gloss enamel. It seemed too glossy at first, but now looks relatively correct.

This is a gray tank from a '65 production car. Notice there is no schutz, only paint.

I had those SWB 911 and 912 when they were new and they had grey tanks. I have several SWB tanks in my basement and they are all grey, They do not magically turn black.

Here are my file photos from Paul R's one owner 1967 911S.
Finish is as per the factory for a SWB in 1966/1967.
Hood hinges are satin black, bolts are touched up black matte. Front latch and catch is silver cad - rear latch and catch are gold cad.
Trunk is a satin black with a texture.
Gas tank is a grey with texture.
Hope this helps:
Bob
