Made a nice score on eBay - a visor for the quattro signed by Hannu Mikkola, Michele Mouton and Stig Blomqvist. Perfect match for the other visor I had signed by John Buffum

Pretty cool bud.........
You reminded me of a phone conversation with Vintage Motorsport's editor Randy Riggs complaining about (what I thought was) the gross omission in the Bobby Unser 'King of the Hill' story about his overall win at Pike's Peak (Unser's Mountain) in the Quattro.
My complaint was:
There was not a single word about Michele Mouton's win in the Quattro the year before... and that THAT (as everyone knew because of Unser's 'off the record' comments) was the motivating reason Unser reluctantly drove the that 'furin' car up HIS hill to reclaim the record away from 'that little !@#$%^& French !@#$..........
Randy was way ahead of me and said I wasn't the first to complain about it.
He also said that I should write something up for the 'Letter Box' column... but damn, I never did........
I'm think'n to write that letter I needed more of what Michele had to get her up that hill .....

Exactly Chuck. Mouton set an outright course record in 1985 of 11:25. She was in a road car-based Sport quattro rally car with 500HP (the car was later rallied by John Buffum in the US). All previous records were in purpose-built open-wheelers Unser was livid that he was beaten by a woman in a German car. Mouton is said to have replied to him "'if you have the balls you can try to race me back down as well."
The following year, Unser used an S1 quattro and set another record at 11:09. Now, comparing Mouton's Sport to Unser's S1 is like comparing a 73 911 RS Lightweight to a 935!
In 87, the factory was out of rallying and decided to build a purpose-built Pikes Peak car with Walter Rohrl at the controls. He did a 10:47!

The seller sent me a pic of his project car, saying my payment on the visor would be going toward the project. If I would've known my money was going toward this, I would have doubled my bid just on general car-guy principle
Thanks Curt for the interesting side bar story on Unser vs. Michele. I remember reading of both records at the time, but I was unaware of the Unser testosterone attack!!

I guess this should be re-titled the Pikes Peak thread. Ford is bringing none other than Marcus Gronholm in a 2010 Fiesta for this year's event. They are running the unlimited class and trying to be the first to break the 10 minute mark - almost a minute quicker than Rohrl in the S1 quattro As legendary and spectacular as the old Gruppe B rallye cars are, developments mainly in suspension and chassis dynamics over the years have made today's rally cars even quicker!
Gronholm Coming to Pikes Peak
I like this class...
