Thread: How many keys should an original car have?

How many keys should an original car have?

I've seen black keys, red keys, ignition-only keys, door-only keys, glove compartment keys...
What's the deal with all those keys?!
Both my cars only have ONE key that opens both doors and start the car up.
Is this correct? Should there be only one or several keys (like modern cars) to theses 70 and 71 cars? Why the different colors (red/black)?
Please shine some light on this subject for me...

Black is the standard key & red is the valet key; one of each was delivered with the car. Two of each? I was gypped.

The cars came with both black and red handled keys. I believe there were 2 of each.

The black key was the general key that worked eveywhere: ignition, doors, glove book and front hood release on Targas.

The red key or "valet" key only worked on the ignition. The thought was the owner could secure valuables in the glove box and lock it with the black key. He (or she) could give the red key to the valet for parking the car.

    In theory, anyway.

Also, I believe the plastic handle's trapizodial shapes are inverted from the black to red keys. But I'm not positive.

I'm sure those more knowledgable will chime in....

If you read the owners manual, it will tell you how many keys the car was delivered with, their color, and their function...

Hey John (Zithlord), on what page of the "911 S Owner's Manual" should it be?
Just read it and didn't find it...

Ricardo; it dos not say in the 70/71 manual. Later manuals state 2 black, two red. Red for valet, no access to glove box etc.

Original plastic handle keys only have 'Porsche' stamped on them. No manufacturer stamp 'DOM', which later replacement keys had.

There is more on the subject in this thread:

Here is the page on keys from the 1973 manual, black key to the left, red to the right:
