My 69 E targa, correct color?

Hi there, I just bought this 69E targa, it should be a matching number car and in quite good condition. Seller told me the original color was silver metallic, however the plaquet say Irish green, car is now in irish green but need some minor chassi work and a respray.

What is your impression on this color plaquet, original or "matched to paint" later in its history?

I would say the badge is pretty definitive. In 1969 many of the silver metallic cars had really weird paint codes. What did the PO offer as evidence for the claim it was originally silver?

    also

Pull up some carpeting and see what it looks like underneath. Everything in the images reflects what a decent repaint would have covered. That year had all black engine/trunk areas. I think the best clue is hidden under that carpeting.

6806 is irish green, it's definitely a repaint (you can see the hood and trunk latches painted over)

    Silver Paint

Interesting. You can see what appears to be silver paint in the scratches surrounding the paint code tag.

Or are scratches through the paint showing metal, not silver paint?

    Silver Paint

Based on the photo, looks like silver paint with a metallic flake to me. The green paint looks very thin and not at all deep enough to have gone through the primer and down to bare metal. The border of the tag, especially the right side, shows what appears to be silver underneath a very thin "fog" of green paint that would be in line with someone having sprayed green over silver.

Also looks like the green paint was a re-spray that covered the paint code tag, which was then carelessly scratched off with a screwdriver or some other inapproprate tool.

Would obviously have to see it up close and personal, but the photo provides support for my hypothesis. Photo analysis does provide support for the car having been silver at some point. Could have been green, painted re-sale silver, then respayed green again. Or, it may just have been silver from the beginning.

If it was silver to start with then it got an incorrect paint tag. That would be very unusual, but not unknown.

.. most interior out, mats, windscreen and trim off, definitly irish green originally. i scratched through the current green coat and one layer silver to find the original irish green below.

Anyone have a paint brand recommendation? I was thinking about using acrylic enamel.
