    Wine Country Classic

A little late this year posting some photos of the premier Northern Calif. Vintage event right after the Monterey Historics at Sears Point ( Infineon Raceway if we must, but that really grates, doesn't it ) held a week and a half ago. Best participant turn-out ever, with a healthy Porsche presence.

I've taken the liberty of starting out with some non-Porsche photos. I sincerly hope I'm not the only one who finds compelling beauty in the craftsmanship and applied aesthetics of another age altogether............ no matter who's badge is on the hood. I believe art is created when everyday functional design is endowed with elements which so completely satisfy the eye of the beholder.

Take the first photo of the rear of Fangios '56 Maserati F250 Formula One car. Sure, the picture shows a gas tank and an oil tank, but can you think of a way to make it even more strikingly beautiful. What could you possibly add or subtract, ande why would you want to do either. How could you improve function, given then-current technology ? I submit that you couldn't. Or the Abarth Carrera, probably the most beautiful of all of Porsche's early 4-cylinder cars. What could possibly be done to improve it aesthetically.

I end this modest selection with what I think represents today's best effort to create the most beautiful car given current technology, sense of style, proportions and is the car I would have very much liked to have driven home as my own,...... the new, extremely limited-production Bentley Brooklands Coupe. Taking it in it makes you forget that it too is a VW G.m.b.H product, just as I am afraid Porsche will end up being, most likely sooner rather than later.

    Enjoy

....and another five shots. Incidentally, the owner of the blue 356 at the bottom of these five showed me documentation that this is the prototype for the first of the 4-cam engined Carrera Series of 356s.

It's too bad there's no audio available with stills. The sound of these cars at full throttle coming out of the final hairpin is indescribable.
