Thread: Last 1966 911 with Solex carbs

Last 1966 911 with Solex carbs

    Carburetor geeks,

Let's see if we can really determine the last chassis number with Solex carbs. We know (from our "source in the Alps") that 903910 was the last engine with Solex as that was the last type 901/01, series engine. After that, factory went to 907xxx engine series, type 901/05, with Webers and the first was engine 907001. And I have these cars in my data base:

    Chassis Engine
    303585 903804
    303??? 903910
    303810 907114
    303868 907031
    303872 907112

I'm fairly confident that these all have there original engines but not 100%. Also we know the change took place in Feb. 1966. Help us fill in the blanks. Thanks.

I'll send a PM to Pelican Gregk1, he owns or owned 303734, very close to the break. Actually, I think he sold it to Dave Austin AKA MackSkibum.

I don't understand why you put "xxx," the first Weber engine was 907001.

    Interesting.

    903910- 903804 = 106

In other words 106 more Solex for VIN's.

    303585 + 106 = 303691

First Weber car you have is 303810 (engine 907104).

What kind of carbs did (roughly) 303700-303800 get?

Look forward to your John's reply w/ info from gregK.

What I had put was confusing and I have edited that post. Also, I correct 907114 (from 907104 which was a misreading of the engine number by me from my pic file.) Thanks.

I have these in the relevant area:
    303563 903696
    303621 903812
    303779 903800
    303780 903892
    303810 907114
    303838 907246

Now since the engine numbers started 100 higher than the VIN's we might expect 303810 to have the last Solex engine. However it has either 104 or 114 higher than might be expected. Two things come into play: first is that the engine #'s were not used sequentially (nor were the VIN's for that matter), and second there were probably some losses or holdbacks on the Solex engines, so the Weber's got introduced a bit early. I'd guess the VIN we are looking for is about 303800. But I bet that there are some exceptions to the cut-off VIN.

It would also be useful to try and find the engine build # for the transition. It appears they were building the 901/20 race engines towards the end of the Solex version 901/01 production run.

Interesting! Your nice Sand Beige car. Do you have the engine number? In another thread Jose Hinarejos reports 305675 with engine 909445, type 901/5 (as the engine type should be) has Solex! Thanks.
