Thread: 911S Registry or 911's Registry

    911S Registry or 911's Registry

    I have always assumed that this was the 911S Registry but the scope obviously (and rightly) includes all longhoods - so is it the 911's Registry?

    Don't forget us poor cousins - 912's. There has been a fair amount of traffic on those too - though I am to blame for some of it!

    When Dave Hillman died two years ago a week from Sunday - I set up a BBS (in waiting) just in case the 912BBS he founded went away - Longhood 9's. There are a few 911 owners over there - and some of us frequent both boards.

    Even though I don't own a 911 and likely never will (the CFO questions why we have TWO 912's. One of each, I say - a Targa for Yosemite and a coupe for the Bay Area), I should probably join the "S-registry".

    Good man that Dave Hillman. Miss seeing him at the events.

    Funny reaction and stigma still exist despite numerous clarifications and welcome mat to all. Attended regular gathering at EASY. One person was skimming through the first issue of ESSES. Another comes over and starts skimming through it as well with interest...until he was told it was ESSES. Gave it back as quick as he could explaining he didn't have an S but had a couple early 911s. I tried to explain you didn't have to have an S to be a member or to even look at the magazine. It was a very silly reaction.

    So yes it does not seem clear to all that all longhoods are welcomed and the stigma still exists.

    I'm one of the 912 owners around here who will likely never own an S (unless someday a Cayman S counts). That doesn't dissuade me, but perhaps the wording on the membership form could be re-done so as to not appear exclusionary. It currently says:

    The Early 911S Registry compiles a comprehensive list of as many early S's as possible. If you own an 'S', please include this essential information.

    While I respect that the intent was to keep track of the Ses and not exclude anyone, is there any harm in collecting the info for any early 911/912?

    Good News: The door is open to start up a 911/912 Registry from the very beginning.

    BTW..there's lots of 911 E & T owners that are members already.

    but dont we already have a 912 registry? dont get me wrong, this place is a wealth of resources, but i do enjoy teh 912 registry and the members, and what they do to preserve the marque. that being said though, i do need to join up here as well, as the info here, especially on sports purpose cars, is incredible.

    i really miss dave too.. he was kind of like a father figure in the 912 registry. i learned alot from him, and think of him often.

    here is a pic i took of his car at the last rendezvous (his son in law drove it up). if it wasnt for him i wouldnt have bought my dslr.

    Must be a real slow news day with nothing else to worry about when we have enough time and mental energy to philosphize about the name of this little society of longhood aficionados possibly not being an exact, precise description of who or what we are. I am sure Chuck, John, Fred Stewart and some of the earliest of founding members could enlighten us all on the origins of the Early 911 S Registry name, but this thread started me thinking about why on earth anyone would think that the name of this club is so important

    I'm in my fourth year of membership. I have enjoyed every minute of it. I do not own a 911S, but I do have an early 911. I have never been made to feel like an outsider or unwelcome in any way, unless I posted something silly, pompous or ignorant, ( this may well be one of those posts) in which case the contempt of the group is downright palpable, but I accept that it's my fault when I shoot myself in the foot. Tell me the name of someone on this board who hasn't done the same.....porobably more than once. I've come to the conclusion that if we want to be respected members in good standing and feel that we have something useful to contribute as well as take from the club / forum, we have to evolve on a personal level to better fit into this relatively small group. If our goal and motivation for joining is to learn more about the cars we all love so much, we must understand that every member on this board has a different reason for joining and most likely has a slightly different outlook on his or her 911. It's exactly that diversity that makes this club so appealing.

    I strongly hope the Early S Registry doesn't favor change for changes sake alone. I suggest that we currently have an extremely satisfactory menu of reasons for the early 911 enthusiast to be a part of the Early 911 S Registry......exactly as is. Changing the name and doing nothing else would be a meaningless, superficial gesture of trying to be all things to every potential member out there. If we do change the name we really must follow up and and institute actual changes in the running of the club. That would be the only way a name change would make any sense at all........but then there's the dilema: where the Hell would you start, and please don't say..."with a name change,". This is not stand-up comedy. What aspect of the club would we possibly want to tamper with.

    Just look at the bigger Early S Registry picture: the ESSES has always been a membership perk to look forward to, and now that real professionalism has been added in such generous measure, it's as big a highlight to me as a raceweekend at Laguna Seca or an invigorating weekend run in my 911. The level of marque expertise and the willingness to share it on our forum with others, be they paid members or mere registered guests is downright astonishing, while maintaining a degree of civitlity one just doesn't encounter on other forums, and there's always an Early S Registry presence at most local events, (LA Lit show, Ventura, Dana Point, etc. Anyone can enter into this Porsche nirvana for a mere $ 35 bucks per annum. Show me another association of like-minded but yet distinctly disparate Early 911 tifosi anywhere.....worldwide, who enjoy the same mix of quantity and quality of offerings from their club! The club's been around for a long time, we have a wonderfully productive, stable membership, the virtual Who's Who in early 911matters, we're growing, every aspect of the club is looking better than ever, and all of it was achieved under the banner of the original Early 911 S Registry. If the club remains largely as it presently is, I shall be a member for as long as they'll have me. A name change will not have the slightest impact on any of the above.

    I am not aware that there is even a requirement or a statement which mandates that registrants or paid members even need to own an early 911, let alone an S. Everyone is welcome, always has been. If that's news to anyone, perhaps they haven't delved into the nature and history of the Early S Registry sufficiently to realize just how open this club really is. If you happen not to own an early 911S no one is going to hold it against you. No useful purpose at all would be served if we spend any time working up a new handle to reflect political correctness so we don't appear exlusionary ( what a repulsive suggestion ) to owners of Porsches other than longhood 911 S models. If someone is so hyper-sensitive and interprets things so literally that they feel excluded, unqualified, or hesitate to join because the clubs name doesn't exactly match the model name on their engine lid, well, perhaps it's time to objectively re-examine the reasons for joining.

    If someone feels they just gotta have an outlet for their activist energy, may I suggest paying your dues if you haven't already done so, display your club decal, participate in the forum and maybe even feed worthwhile articles to Dilger & Tilton for the ESSES once in a while. Most of all, put your energy into your longhood 911 ( or whatever). That is the whole point of it, after all, isn't it ?

    I log on here as relief from other concerns, worries and irritations. I'd like to continue to log on for the knowledge on this forum, to exchange thoughts and ideas with other 911 lovers, to find out about happenings in the 911 community and maintain contacts with far-flung friends. Occasionally I'd like to be able to add my 2 cents worth to a discussion that gets my blood up and / or parallels my interests. How would changing the name affect or improve any of that.
