Help! 1973 Recaro sport seat inserts

    Hello everyone:

Are the inserts for the Recaro sport seats different for 1973 as opposed to 1970?

Both cars have perforated leather to the inserst and regular leather to the bolsters. The difference I see is that the 70 car has a more "puffy" look in the areas that are seperated by stitching. On the 73 car those same areas are flatter and wider.

Is that about who restored them or just about the fact that Porsche did them differently in 73?

BTW, In New York we have had rain 17 of 20 days. That gives me plenty of time to hang out in the garage and look at stuff like this.

    All the best,

    John

    OK,

    I'll jump in...

Even though the factory had exceptions I have found that that leather sport seat in the 2.2's had perforated bolsters and basket weave inserts. The 2.4's had smooth bolsters and perforated inserts....

Pic of original early '71 sport seats....

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

The reason the 2.4 (an on?) had smooth bolsters might be because Recaro learned that outside moisture eats the foam bolsters while the bolsters don't need ventilation.

    Just my $.02

    Ok,

    Sorry, didn't see this thread.

Yes, inserts are different between these years,.... I would also say that it appears that the inserts look flatter on the 73's than 70 from stitched row to stitched row.

For vinyl, you will want allover non perforated (bolsters or inserts), material is a non sheen vinyl with a little more texture than previous years. Tony at Autobahn has a very nice substitute for OE.

For leather the inserts were perforated, but only partially on the inserts, it didn't go all the way up the back to the top, and same for the bottom, not perfed all the way to the knee region.

Other insert options were houndstooth, madras, and a very wide wale cord insert.

    regards,
    Eric

Thanks, Eric and Chuck. I thought it was this way but needed some confirmation. The new seats (for my 73 car) are regular leather bolsters and perforated inserts. My concern was that when I compare these to the 70 car, the inserts lay much flatter between the stitching. It seems that this is how it should be.

Thank goodness as I thought a huge mistake had been made by the seat restorer.

    You all made my day

    all the best,

    John
