MFI issues after a top end job....????

Hey all. So here is the story. I starte to replace my headliner and found massive rust in the rear sear section that needed replacing. So engine came out. While it was out I decided to have the heads redone. So now the engine is back together and in the car. It runs.....mostly

    Here is the issue

Its a 2.4 T MFI engine. Ran just fine when I pulled it but unknown mileage.....hence the top end. She idles just fine and runs below 2K ok. Anything above that and it starts to spit and sputter. Wont even rev over 5500 RPM.

So....here is my thought process. Fuel pumps fine as no problem before. I have headders and the thermostat was replaced with a thumb screw. So i can adjust the mixture quite easily. points are spot on and so is timing.

I timmed the pump with the engine out.....so it "should" be right on. Im 99% sure I got it right.

I adjusted the throttle plates, and air correction screws already to get even readings but thoses really shouldnt affect upper RPM.

Im at a loss.....any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

why did you remove thermostat? It really only facilitates starting. Since the engine was out I'd check that the fuel strainer at the tank is not clogged. Did you drain old fuel out and fill tank with fresh fuel? Are you getting proper advance from your distributor? How long was motor out of car? You might want to run some carb cleaner through pump to make sure it's not gummed up. My guess is fuel flow or pressure.

The PO removed the thermostat when he put headders on. So there is no airflow for a thermostat. The engine was out for about two months. It was fresh fuel when I pulled the engine. So two months shouldnt of gummed anything up. The distributor was fine before and is still getting the correct advance.

I guess I really need to check my fuel pressure. Where is the best place to check and what should it be?

This is where the fuel pressure is measured. I believe the spec is 0.8 +/- 0.2 atm which is 11.8 +/- 2.9 psi . The check valve attached to the fuel filter housing sets the operating pressure. Gary

You need to check and clean the filter sock inside the tank. Had the same problem and after cleaning it had no issues. The sock is a fine brass screen and cleans with carb or brake clean and some air pressure.
