    I like this!

I am slowly restoring my 66 (304375) that I bought about two years ago through this list.

I want to keep my original fenders since they are stamped and very straight and solid. Yesterday I took my frt fenders to a body repair artist.

The frt fenders were first baked off, then media blasted followed by coating to avoid further rust. My friend took them apart today.

As you can see in the pictures is there not any coating / paint in the boxed area. Since moisture will creep in there it's only a matter of time before it will be rust through (again).

Even VW "dipped" the car bodies in primer back then, my '64 Beetle I am doing bodywork on has primer inside the heater channels, etc.

Kinda weird Porsche did not do this also.

    rust

I always pour a rust preventive paint in that area and try to coat the hollow area. I do that with lid frames also. Thats interesting to see the inner panel removed. Will you use one from another fender when rebuilding?

Since almost all old fenders are like this I asked the guy if I should get new fenders to be used as donor. He was not really interested in those due to their poor panel fit (for a lot of money). He is going to hammer exact replacement parts.

What I could use is a nice, solid 'strip' where the fender bolts run through so if any one has a beat up fender w/ that strip still good I would be interested. It will save him a lot of time.
