    WTB: Interior Rally Light

This is a long shot, but you never know with this group. The 1968 Sports Purposes Bulletin lists what they call a "co-pilot's interior light" (M-No. 9182) as an accessory for Touring Car Group 2 vehicles. It's a flexible gooseneck that mounts on the right windshield pillar. Anyone happen to have one?

    John,

Don't have one to sell you at the moment, but have been looking for the same thing at these two sites who do sell them.

    1.http://www.amazon.com/Hella-Map-Light-7-INCH/dp/B000HVX31U/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1211393900&sr= 1-7

    2.http://www.vhclassics.de/

The second site is in German but after you open it, if you click on "Kartenlampen" ( maplights ) you'll find a nice selection of pretty authentic units.

Just for reference I'm enclosing a photo of Don Ahearn's old '68 silver gray with Irish green hood panels rally car with what was claimed to be an original rally/map light.

Really look forward to seeing your car, and hope you do very well in the concours.

    Good luck

    John...

Thanks for the input. The light in the picture of Don's car differs from the description in the 1968 Sports Purposes bulletin, which reads:

The light is screwed onto the right windshield pillar directly over the instrument panel. A holder for the flexible arm when not in use is bolted under the light fixing; this is also fitted on the windshield pillar.

The light in Don's car appears to be mounted under the dash.

I know this is probably is unobtainium as you can get, but all the other Sports Purposes components on the car are NOS and I'm hoping that I might be able to find the needle in the haystack.

    Cheers,

    Rally Navigator's Map Light

    John,

Try UK eBay: www.ebay.co.uk. These map lights were popular with the rally crowd in the 1960s.

Period manufacturers included Lucas, Wipac, Butler. There may have been German variants as well, but I don't know about that. This is a mandatory piece of kit for Mini Cooper S rally guys, but they can be found easily enough.

You might try using some of these words in your eBay searches: Rally, Rallye, Map Light, Map Lamp, Butlers, Wipac, Lucas, Les Leston, Navigator, Co-Driver, Mini Cooper.

    Good Hunting!

    Best Regards,
    Andy

You can buy them new from various UK suppliers such as Holden Vintage & Classic (if you can't get one closer to home):

    Rally Map Light

Another UK source, they also have rally timers, etc., etc. Good vintage stuff fairly priced.
