Great little detail!
Is there some "correct" lenght or where they just ramdon lenght (and brand)based on co-drivers liking?

I suspect the placement is more about co-drivers preferences
two pics attached
the Larousse Gelin TDF car from 1970 (semi werks)
and the 1972 Monte car 230 0041 again for Larousse but this time with Jean-Claude Perramond (werks entry)
both slightly different but in both cases the attachment and power supply seem to come from the A pillar and the map light lies flat across the dash (sort of)

although less convenient to operate the switch do I prefer this position. The map light is beaming it's light from behind the navigator which prevents that he/she looks into the light. Especially when it's real dark and when any illumination kills your night view.
just my $.02

If this is a pushbutton switch, it could create an incidental cut-off after landing a jump. (head bumps it)

Back in the day the Butlers light was commonplace and we all fitted them in our Rally Cars as a backup for the Eolite and 'Poti' that were used for accurate map reading.
By 1970 the flex light of choice tended to be the Avanti with an Iris Hood rather than a cone.

When you had to read maps in the dark for 200+ miles using a 1" to the Mile 7th Series Ordnance Survey map it was really hard work and a magnifier was essential.
In the Road Rallies were 'up-practiced' and the Pace Notes were not allowed.
Routes were defined by 6 figure grid references and issued about 1 hour before the start.
A typical route was defined by around 100-150 grid references and the roads were open to the public
It was utter madness and normally events stared at around 11.00 pm and finished around 6.30am with Breakfast and Beer.
Good quality events had up to 120 cars entered.
This is Harold Morley in his Lightweight RS competing on the 1973 'Nutcracker Rally' which he won.
We were competing on the same event in an Escort Twin Cam but ended our night in a very deep ditch
Avanti Nav lights,,, switched, non switched, Iris and Cone headed, 12 and 18" are available here
