    Period Correct Tires

As a one-time Technical Editor of the 356 Registry I used to get kind of tired of the endless questions about tires. And now I have one myself.

I'm finishing up the Sports Purposes build of my '67 SWB coupe and I'd like to be as authentic as possible with the tires. I'm running 911R 7" wheels in the back and deep 6's in the front, a configuration that is permissible under the Sports Purpose guidelines published in 1968. They state that an appropriate tire for these wheels is a 5.50 M-15. I have found some Dunlops with this designation - CR65. Would they be period appropriate? And what are they equivalent to in terms of modern labeling?

    Thanks,
    JohnA

Tires in alpha numeric and metric. These are the hot ticket for a narrow street tire.

I agree with Tom, Avon is the way to go. If it's just for show them go with Dunlop bias belted 500L/500M.

Ahhhh the sixties... I envision myself one early Saturday morning wearing plaid shorts, black shoes with white socks smoking a cigarette heading to the hardware store to buy a bag of nails.
SWB cars are an acquired taste however once acquired theirs no turning back.

I think it would be pushing it to mount 550M15 on 6" wheels. These have a 9.5" cross-section and a 6.5" tread width. This is the tire most guys run on their 906's, but with 8" wheels. It's a fairly tall tire at 26" so if the car is lowered, it's going to be trouble.

If you can make the Dunlops work, it would look awesome though! These are shots of a 906 at RRIII.

    John,

The Emory's have been running a lot of their cars with the Hoosier Speedster. Most of the cars typically run the 185/60, but they had a street car there that had the 205/60's on it, and they looked absolutely great on the car with a nice fat round sidewall.

    Here's a link to the hoosier... http://www.hoosiertire.com/pb10306.HTM

The only thing I don't like about the Avon's is I can't really hang the tail out anymore

    Why not Bluestreaks?

The Goodyear Bluestreak in; 5.50-15 G-12 may be "period appropriate".

I've seen a number of period pictures with early 911s wearing these shoes.

The Avons would be better for actual tarmac use.
