    Clock Riddles

This one has me scratching my head. The trip odometer has failed on my '72 911 and I thought I would take a look and see if it is something I could fix. In order to reach behind it I removed the clock first. The clock has always worked perfectly, but now that it's back in, it only runs when the key is on - and then it runs perfectly.

I pulled it out again and traced the clock wires back and they vanish into a harness just as before. What in the world happened?

    Cheers,
    John

P.S. I decided that discretion is the better part of valor and I'm sending the speedo to Palo Alto Speedo. I can sometimes pull this kind of thing off, but one of my projects as a kid, an electric kitchen clock that wasn't running, ran fine after I disassembled, cleaned and assembled it. The only problem was that it ran backwards. It used it to create a lot of confusion during my college years though.

My guess is that somehow you got the wires wrong. The power for the clock is not switched while now you have it on a wire that is switched. Test the wires you have for one that always has power.

I'm sure glad I posted this in the Technical Section as it turned out to be a highly technical and complex issue - a blown fuse.

I noticed that the interior lights weren't working either and recalled that they are on fuse #1 along with the clock. After an involved procedure that called on a high level of technical expertise the problem was fixed.

The thing that threw me though is that the clock did work when the key was on.

    Cheers,
    JohnA
