Case, chain housings, layshaft....for $1000. That seems cheap.
Peter, those links did not work for me.
aah, missed that.....
If nobody else bids Ill get it for $1000. What could go wrong there?
Please help me understand. What is the real worth of a bare case? If you have a complete engine but need a new case, then I can see the point. But you still have to worry about the cost to bring any used & unknown case up to a useable state. If you want to build an engine from scratch, then I would think that as complete an engine would be the best place to begin. I had access to 5 completely stripped engines, but as I looked at the piles of parts I was worried about being able to put together a set of parts to build just one. I was working with an expert engine builder to inventory the parts, and he just shook his head.

I disagree. Parts are parts, motors are motors but motors are made from parts. The motor parts are not like 356B Belgian roadster body parts. Porsche motor parts are made precisely and interchange pretty easily. The first 911 motor I ever built was from piles of parts and it worked well. Aluminum cases are desirable for high horsepower applications. What in the world could an aluminum case need before a rebuild? Line bore, doubtful; timeserts, Ill pass on that, main bearing web streamlining, no thank you, oil relief mods, nice but not necessary. For race motors its a different story. Whats the value of a bare alu. case? An obscene amount if you own the original chassis, more if it is an S. I have a 901/06 al. case I bought at the old Skytop swap meet for $60.
