Bosch 3 Pin CDI V. Permatune 3 Pin CDI

Question here... I have the blue 3 pin Permatune CDI in my 71T that was installed way back in the late 70's or early 80's. While it runs great with this setup, I would really like to change back to the original Bosch stock CDI. I was told a long time ago that the Permatune provides a stronger/cleaner signal that gives the ignition system better performance. Is this true or is it pretty much the same performance as the OE Bosch unit?

Any input on this would be much appreciated.

Scott, capacitor discharge ignitions suffer from basically the same limitation from a technical standpoint-- you get an intense but very short duration spark. What you really want is an intense LONG duration spark with a very high frequency that's also cheap-- which is why manufacturers have gone to coil-on-plug.

I have never heard anyone cite dyno figures showing a difference in power from the two ignitions. Lots of snake oil, but no numbers.

With those comment out of the way the difference between the aftermarket single spark units is basically reliability, and the Bosch units have that hands down, even after 40 years of service, they still work very reliably. This cannot be said of the older permatunes. I can't comment on the new Permatunes, but I do know that they are available with a Bosch CDI external case . . .

In my own '66 I'm installing an MSD, hidden out of sight. These units are very reliable and cheap.
