    early bumper guard originality question

What is the correct 69 - 72 bumper guard design? specifically the back of the upper section above the bumper. I've seen black plastic and also chrome with a slot across the top.

    Thanks in advance,

Don't necessarily consider this definitive...but I have the "all chromed metal" on my '68, and they are original.

I believe what happened is that at some point they were superseded by the black plastic in the back. I have drilled holes in mine for the cross-bar guard that was on the car when I got it. Years ago I thought to replace them and ordered a new set...they came with the black plastic backs and I returned them!

Black plastic pushes into 2 guides on either side of the top part of the bumperette. Thats what is correct for 69 - 73 as far as I know

RGrimm, that's interesting, as I thought the metal back stopped at the end of 67! I've owned several 68's and they had black plastic back, perhaps they were repro's or maybe they were exchanged along the way.

How low is your serial number? Are you pretty certain they came with the car?

    tks,
    Eric

A factor might be wide S or small standard deco. May be they were superseded at different moments in time? (run out the stock first).

It's a normal (non-L), so standard deco. Chassis number is 11830091, so fairly low.

One of the early owners was a gentleman in Minneapolis/St. Paul that went through numerous early 911s, but I'd have no reason to suspect he switched parts back and forth between cars. From what I understand he did drive the car to both coasts--he, his wife and their dog (very understanding wife, and dog too, for that matter!) to both DE and concours the car. So I'm guessing that's how it came.

I figured the factory switched at some point--probably for cost reasons--but didn't think it was that early...

Eric- I have an early '68 (12800836) with the chrome metal
backs. Guess they changed during early-mid '68?

May not be representative but my late '68 model year T/R (11820912) in the "Out of Africa" thread came with all chrome which I am pretty sure are the original fitment to the car.
