    Oil Temp Gauge Wiring ??

My Oil Temp guage is pegging at the top of the scale as soon as the Key is switched on. I've checked the wire for continuity and it appears fine. I dealt with the problem by installing a temp VDO guage under the dash, and I want to remove it, so time to figure it out.

The other side of the guage (Oil pressure) is working fine. To me I'm thinking I have a grounding problem at the guage, but why would that not effect the other side? of the same gauge?

How about the oil tank level guage to the left, it is also pegging at top of range. I thought that was because I hadn't hooked it up when I put the tank in, but it is hooked up. Would it make a difference in either if I put the ground on the wrong post of the tank level sender??

    Thanks, Bob

still chasing this 7 years later. The temp gauge i added works fine on the sender i have, but i don't have an early sender, i have a later sender.

Is there a change with how the gauge works with the early 911/356 sender and the later 69 on sender?

Both are available, but the pre 68 version is about 200 more than the 69-78 version

Your temp gauge temperature range must match the temp sender rating. If the gauge is going full scale with the ignition on, then if you pull the wire from the sender and ground it it should full scale the opposite way.

thanks Ed, so when i drive it the temp drops to bottom of range, i guess i'm buying a 250-$ sender unless somebody wants to send me one on the cheap.

You might want to contact North Hollywood Speedometer or Palo Alto Speedometer. I had a similar resistance range problem some time ago and got a sender from North Hollywood Speedometer. I don't recall what it cost, but I guarantee you if it had been anywhere near $ 100 I would remember.
