    Distributor numbers for 68

what number distributor should I have in my 68? I am having trouble making them out with the mirror and all.

The distributor on my car has a vacuum can attached but it is plugged. Would this be normal or did someone remove some smog equipment? or ??

    Thanks

    Gary

What type of car (T,S, L, Standard) and is it a USA car?

    If it's a L or regular 911 it should have a Bosch 901.602.021.02 or 901.602.021.04 if equipped with emission controls. A 911S should have 901.602.021.50 and a 911T should have 901.602.022.00 (Marelli).

That being said the parts inside the dist don't always match up and be from a different dist.

I just went through swapping out my Marelli for a Bosch on my 69T and learned a few things. My understanding is that the following will work for 2.0L engine.

    901 602 021 02 911/L = Bosch 0 231 159 001
    901 602 021 04 911/L = Bosch 0 231 159 001
    901 602 021 50 911S = Bosch 0 231 159 002
    901 602 027 00 911E = Bosch 0 231 159 006
    901 602 031 00 911S = Bosch 0 231 159 007

There is also a 0 231 169 001 that has a vacuum advance and is made out of aluminum instead of cast iron. That is what I have in my car now but not using the vacuum advance since my car doesn't use it.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey EA911,

Lots of part numbers there, thanks. I will be trying to find a Bosch now.

Maybe you could continue with your experience with this swap. How tough was it to find a corect Bosch?....
    Thanks,

    231 184 007

I was finally able to make out the numbers clearly. The numbers stamped on the case are 231 184 007. Anyone have a reference showing the original application? My distributor is an aluminum case unit with the adjustment tab cast as part of the housing. Someone had to add a machined aluminum block to the engine case to accept and secure this distributor. Wonder why they might have done that?

I believe you will find they did more than that. A distributor for a 1968 should have a 27mm body that goes into the case and use a sheet metal clamping device to secure the dist. A dist. with the cast in situation has a 30mm body. So they might have milled the dist. hole to take the newer Dist.

    thanks

    Thanks mike et al

Interesting someone would have done all that. The engine seems to run great now that I have the fuel starvation issue sorted, although I am piecing together the engine is a real parts mut.

Having problems finding what engine your dist. 0 231 184 007 goes to, but it looks like a 1974 2.7 Carrera may be it. Would not stake my life on it thought.

Hi Dan - My mechanic gave me a list of porsche distributor numbers that will work for a 2.0L engine and then I posted on both Pelican and Early S for a Bosch dizzy and had a member on Pelican respond having one but it needed to be refurbished.

Apparently early Bosch dizzy command big money but you need to post and see if someone has one for a good price. As a gauge I paid $160 for a refurbished unit.
