Being an '88 the first thing I would check is the DME Relay under seat.

First thing I would do is stop feeling responsible for the car.
Until the last 10 years most manufacturers only provided a
    12 month warranty from new.

I remember well contacting the prior owner about a mechanical failure on the first Porsche I owned. He said......"Welcome to the Porsche Club." Good words. Use them.

Have top agree with Andy. Replace the DME

This is the voice of experience speaking! Recent experience!

Was headed from Sacramento to Carmel on Monday morning. I made it about ten miles south of Stockton and the car just "dried up" on me. Spark was good, temp, oil, voltage all good. Just wasn't getting any fuel for some reason. A tow back to Sacramento and a nice call from Frank's (local Porsche shop) and the problem was solved. The wrench at Frank's informed me that the DME is responsible for 90% of all failures on my car ('91 944 S2) and the Carreras like yours. I bought an extra DME and will keep it in my tool kit from here out.

Start with the DME (about $50) and go from there!

    Go luck!

    dme, fuse box, oxygen sensor

i had the same problem with my 87 carrera. if you can, borrow someone's dme before you go buying one. try it out. you might find it's not the dme and this will save you some $$$. also check to see if it's the fuse box overheating. this can cause the fuses to loosen up and lose contact. lastly, you might want to consider checking the oxygen sensor (feel free to PM me for an explanation about that).

i hope everything works out well for you and your friend.
    good luck.

I had this same problem with my brother in law's 86 Carrera. DME relay was the culprit.

It's an easy DIY quick fix.

As a matter of "S.O.P." - if you are an owner of any '84-89 3.2L powered Porsche, you should have at least one spare DME relay....if not two.

The '78-83 3.0L SC motor is CIS not DME so no relay.
