1970-71 Porsche Built Body vs. Karmann - Galvanized??

I read somewhere that The Porsche built cars of this time period had galvanized floor pans, longitudinals, etc., whereas the Karmann built cars did not. Is this true?

Yes. All bodies were Porsche built starting with MY 1972, hence all had the galvanizing of inner structural elements. Only some Ts and Es had the Karmann bodies, the rest were built by Porsche. Sixth digit of the chassis number is the tipoff - 0=Porsche coupe, 1=targa (all built at Porsche, I think), 2=Karmann coupe.

I can guarantee that you that my 70t was built by Karmann and was NOT galvanized. How you ask, because of the fact that I had to replace the whole floor, fenders, doors, inner and outer rockers, front suspension pan, both door jams, battery boxes etc. The rear longitudinals were good though. and the car has been off the road since 83 and stored in a dry garage since then. Sorry, I had to vent

My 71T chassis was galvanized on the pan. I have the opposite story. My floor pan survived. In 76 the entire chassis were dipped.

For MY70-71, only the floor pan was galvanized, and only in the Reuter built cars. This information can be found in the factory workshop manual, where serial number ranges of cars with and without galvanized floors can be found.

Even fully galvanised models can rust eventually ...
