    '901/23' Racing Crankcase

    Came across this today:

    http://www.carquip.com/parts/911/race/910/index.asp

    'Type 901/23 Factory racing crankcase
    with factory documentation.
    Serial # 5080006, stamped 10 856.
    Titanium head studs.
    Purchased from Vasek Polak Competition.'

'Type 901/23 was a 2.0L racing engine of 80mm bore and 66mm stroke developing 210 horsepower with mechanical fuel injection.'

    $4000

There's mention of some Ti-bits, but what other features/qualities makes this item special? Any motor Gurus here who can provide some more details about this?

    Rick,
Anderson lists this motor in his book but w/o much detail, link is here -http://books.google.com/books?id=QJVcgiQhRfQC&pg=PA108&lpg=PA108&dq=Porsch e+engine+type+901/23&source=bl&ots=lmLYoQ7BN8&sig=33kEWqPyPj0EG4uFJ6 kwxOToJrs&hl=en&ei=YtueSq_ODZOHmQfd-7y1Aw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=5#v=one page&q=&f=true

I think it was essentially the same as the 911R engine but with mechanical injection rather than 46 IDA Webers.

I think the stated power output was actually 10 bhp more at 220 bhp.

    Hi, Phil . . .

Thank you for the link. And I'd love to hear anything else you can find out. I've been looking at building a back-up motor and this came up. Pricey --- but Polak always kept The Good Stuff, so . . .

    The 911r used a 901/22 case. What is the difference between a 22 and 23 case ?

There was probably no difference between the cases with most of the 901/2x engines, The type # just differentiates between the the finished engine. Say between the carbed or fuel injected versions; although the changes there were probably more involved. There may have been both magnesium and aluminum versions of each engine though.

Apparently this case was sold several years ago, but the website cannot be corrected. A new website is being constructed. What is interesting about the crankcase is that it seems both types 22 and 23 shared the same serial # series 508xxxx. It would be very interesting then to check the 911R engines to see what serial #'s were used and what type each one was.
