I didn't know the black horns grills were ever available in anything other than plastic, and that to modify them for fog/driving lights, Porsche merely clipped the bars. Is my memory fading or are these metal grills something that was only for the ROW?

    Sale pending.....

about the material: i'm quite sure it's not plastic because it feels "cold" when you touch it! and it "seems" stronger than plastic...
But with your answer now i'm not SO sure it's not plastic, it is more like feelings... peraphs GERMAN plastic is like our black anodized aluminium!

    Congratulations on the quick sale.

You really can't mistake the two materials. The metal grills are heavy, the plastic ones MUCH lighter. If these are metal and original, my guess is that these were probably an Italian-only item--very rare. I recall Italian cars going over to black trim a bit earlier than other countries. These were probably '72 and earlier grills since the factory could have just used the standard black plastic grills for all '73 cars.

    Hallo Reed.
If you say that the grills , if are made in metal, must weight like e.g. my SWB's grills so my reply is: they are in plastic because they are lighter.
BUT if it's a plastic item, it's a VERY strange plastic material, more similar to aluminium than plastic when it's in your hand..
I'll ask to somebody else in my Porsche Garage...

About the italian trim, this is a piece from Italian market ( you can see the description on the tag: GRIGLIA that means Grille...). I don't know others infos.

I was the one who bought these, and you are correct, my thought is they are plastic. I had a complete NOS driving light set for a 73, and the grills were plastic. If these are metal, I may have the Holy Grail Plastic or metal, they are pretty rare if you have a 73S, which is what I am going to use them for.

I don't believe these are factory foglight grills. AFAIK there were no specific black foglight grills. The standard plastic grills were simply clipped by the factory/dealer/owner when installing the lights. The part number 911.559.431(2).04 corresponds to regular '73 black grills. There is no listing for black foglight grills. The part number for the chrome foglight grills is 901.559.431(2).28.
