Can someone school me on the current state of running tubes vs tubules on old deep six Fuchs? Pros and cons? I've only had this car a few years and did not even know running without tubes was an option.
My wheels are all dated 11/68 and when I purchased new tires in 2018 they installed used inner tubes. I am getting new Perrelli CN36 tires this week and as of now the installer is planning on using inner tubes again. Is it better/safer to locate and acquire the correct valve stems to make these wheels work without tubes?
You'll hear mixed opinions on that topic. It is a fact that all Fuchs prior to the flat-six were designed as tube-type wheels, and lack the bead retention humps that tubeless wheels all have. Tire manufacturers all used to say that you should not run tubeless on tube-type wheels. They generally don't have that statement easy to find these days as tube-type wheels are rare. But if you contact them about it, they still don't recommend it.
That said, lots of old Fuchs are running without tubes these days. While I've heard of a very few old-school tire shops who balk at this, most shops these days don't even realize what a tube-type wheel is, or the differences that make them not tubeless. The biggest problem is finding the proper valve stems to do so.
If you should decide to run with tubes, don't let them install used tubes. Michelin still makes the proper size tube for our tires, and they can be purchased from most any of the vintage tire suppliers. The stems on these tubes will be the smaller diameter ones, and so you will need stem sleeves or bushings to make them properly fit the larger stem hole. Most larger tire shops that also do tractor tires will have the bushings in stock. Or you can get them from NAPA, Amazon, eBay, etc. Just google 'inner tube stem bushing'.

Does anybody know a source for the correct size valve stems. I know they have to be fatter than the run of the mill auto parts stock. Samba seller says he sells correct size. Anybody have current experience.
