Thread: Collision!

    Angry Collision!

    Stopped at stop sign and I was hit from behind yesterday morning. They did not see me at stop sign waiting to turn left!!! In otherwords not paying attention and hit me hard. They were charged and are fully at fault and thank God ,fully insured. Adjuster and appraiser are coming today. Need some insight as to how bad this is so I don't agree to something less than I will need.

    One more thing,... possibly coincidence an not related since it is a 44 year old car, but since the accident the speedometer does not work, is that possible?

    I take it that the brake calipers are installed and working fine. Any difference in the stopping power with the correct calipers? Perhaps you should have been driving the G-wagen, not the P-wagen at the time of the collision. Very sorry to hear that. You need to go to a very good body shop to estimate the damage; not sure what shop would be best. Check for damage near the nose of the transmission. In some cases the impact is carried all the way up, but if shifting is not an issue then that is a good sign.

    Sorry to see this or any damage. It looks to me as if you dodged a bullet. No damage to the rear fender or quarter that I can see. New lid and licence panel, some paint and you're good.

    Yes, what Zeke said. No damage to either bumperette or the quarters. Could have been worse.

    Speedo issue is probably unrelated, just check to make sure the cable is screwed on to the speedo and also the trans. If it is and still doesn work, some troubleshooting will be required to see if the cable is broken inside the sheath.

    You have worse damage than the above posts indicate.

    Your slam panel is bent. When you pull off the license panel, you will see that the rear crossmember sheetmetal is bent, as well, and could have affected the gap between the ends of your quarter panels. You will likely have muffler damage as well.

    The drivetrain will have been bumped forward 3/4" or more, and although its returned to its original position, you need to inspect sheetmetal, exhaust, etc. Possible cause of your speedometer malfunction is that the cable was pinched or connector broken in the impact.

    The rear bumper flanges that mount the bumperettes have been pushed out of alignment and may have broken spot welds.

    You need a very good body shop and mechanic to go over your car. DO NOT accept an adjuster's walk-by estimate on this.

    It doesn't look so bad from the pic's but you should pull off the rear license panel as well as the engine and rear bumpers and look closely at the frame. Does the car drive? Do the rear electricals still work? is there any oil leakage? Are there any odd sounds? These are the things you should be considering before jumping to conclusions. Also, looks like you have a later 2.7 or 3.0 liter CIS motor in your car, so the damage to the motor would not be as critical to the overall value of the car as it would if it were an original 2.0 motor. Just my thoughts. Regardless, I feel your sadness and disappointment. These cars are not growing on trees and parts are getting rarer and more expensive every year.
    Don't accept the other driver's insurance estimate under any conditions. Get an independent appraisal by the best early 911 in the area you can find, and once they have given the appraisal, have them do the work - so there is no misunderstanding in the actual cost of reapir once it has been settled..

    I agree with Eminence Gris - I just recently installed a muffler and had to remove the license plate metal and bumperettes and there wasn't much of a buffer for a hit. Also check the drivers side heat exchangers (or is it just pipes on a 2.7/3.0 engine?) for any push.

    I think we can see that. And since that a double wall area, it's not an easy fix. BTDT.

    Again, due diligence. Sorry you thought I was making less of this than it is. I was just saying it appeared that quater panel buckling had been avoided.

    And I would say that even if it was only a door dent. The thing is, in today's world of body shops, it's up to the mechanic to flag the damage as it is discovered. It's nothing to have the adjuster come by 2 more times to work out the figures. NO adjuster I know is qualified to completely asses the damage. You take your car to where you want it repaired. That's our CA law, anyway.

    I'm pretty close to the body business and have repaired dozens of cars. How about you?
